This is a collapsible emergency shovel. The handle is about a foot long. Don't expect to dig a trench or anything with it.I do a bit of snowmobiling and I've gotten it stuck in the snow off-trail before so I'm packing this in my emergency bag just in case I absolutely need to use it. My snowmobile doesnt have a reverse and it usually takes a bit of digging with my hands, maybe kicking some snow around and then pulling the snowmobile out to get it unstuck. Even with snowmobiles that have a reverse, sometimes you gotta really dig to get it loose enought to back out. While I don't think anybody should expect to be digging trenches with this thing, it's sturdy enough to break some snow and dirt loose. It's advantage is it's weight and compactness. It can fit in any snowmobile compartment or backpack and easily be carried wherever you're going without it being cumbersome. If something should happen, there's also a compass on the end to help you out. It seemed like the compass wasn't great - it's not liquid filled or anything but it'll be enough in emergency situations.I think if you can keep your expectations reasonable, this shovel will do the job it's intended for. Don't expect to break rocks or packed dirt with this thing.

First of all, this item is extremely small. That's my fault because the dimensions were listed and some of the pictures showed how small it is. I just looked at the first picture and the low price and grabbed it. It didn't occur to me that there were such small versions of these and when it showed up I just laughed. Now, once I realized how small it is, there would still have been many, many things I could have used it for. It folds up into a very tiny bag and that is super convenient. At that point I was still pretty happy with it at such a low price and I started imagining situations in which I could use it.If you are giving this to your kid to dig in loose sand on the beach there is no problem here. Of course, they make plastic shovels for that which are even cheaper.OK, here is the big problem, a deal breaker. The threaded yoke that you unscrew to change the position of the shovel is made of cheap plastic. No, really. The entire shovel is made of cheap metal and I'm OK with that. It's clearly for light duty and there would have been plenty of uses anyway. But as soon as I started hacking away, even lightly, the shovel end started coming loose. When I tried to unscrew it or tighten it, either way, I couldn't because it was cross threaded just from a few whacks. I eventually got it unscrewed with a pair of pliers and screwed it tight again but that only lasted a couple more whacks. If only this small but crucial part was made of the same cheap, weak metal that the rest of the shovel is, I would have been quite pleased and I might have bought a few more to keep in handy places. It really is very cute and handy the way it folds up.Assuming they replace that part with a metal one I still have one more design criticism. It's minor but here we go. One reason it fits in that tiny bag is because the handle is in two pieces. It's fantastic. Unfortunately, they have chosen to have the handle screw into the main shaft of the shovel. So when you are tightening that plastic yoke to position the shovel, the handle keeps unscrewing in your hand. When you are loosening the plastic piece you are fine because the handle just gets tighter. It's not the end of the world but there are a few cheap methods they could have chosen which wouldn't turn at all. I'm no expert, but a square fitting with one of those Spring loaded buttons going through a hole to secure it would make me happy. And yes, you are right, it's irrelevant because the shovel is unusable anyway. I'm just thinking that if they replace the plastic piece with a metal piece I'll buy three of these, and if they fix the unscrewing part I'll buy 20 and give them to my friends.

I thought this would be bigger so didn't exactly suit my needs, definitely a fun thing for a child to have camping or if you're an avid camper is lightweight fits easily in a backpack.

Bought 3 for my grandsons, they wanted to do some digging and were using a claw-hammer and garden shovel. They liked this as it fits their exploring needs. I showed them how to use the shovel and compass but with them being 4 - 6 and 9, thought I'd wait on the pick part. I'm sure they'll figure it out soon enough. Excellent for the price and seems pretty durable.

Product is made from thin metal. The threads are not welled made which makes it not tighten up. I not sure if it will work to get through first project even.
