The Mitutoyo 103 series outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a ratchet-stop mechanism for uniform pressure during adjustment. The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001”, with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

Great caliper. It's very easy to operate, reliable and repeatable. Mitutoyo - as you probably know if you're researching which caliper to purchase - makes some of the best metrological tools in the world.

1st issue: Powder coated white not Mitutoyo green.2nd: no holes as pictured3rd: lesser quality then the other XLR micrometers at my work even the model #s are same.4th and biggest: called Mitutoyo USA to verify with SN if genuine. Was told by them to look on youtube. The guy did run out to look in showroom and told me they sold white ones. But offered no other help besides youtube multiple times. So after doing that i believe them to be genuine, of not a high quality fake. After using a handful of time they seem accurate but after this experience i will never buy another Mitutoyo product. Go with Starrett. Sure it costs more but as long as it says made in USA I believe them to be far superior to Mitutoyo. Almost twice the price for Starrett but 3 times the quality over Mitutoyo. I would purchase used Mitutoyo made in Japan, but never another new product. Especially not one made outside Japan. For clarification this item was made in Japan albeit of less quality then older sets i own.
