Other natural gas detectors I've seen on Amazon are electric/plug in. This one is strictly battery operated, which is important because of mounting options. Natural gas goes straight up - it's much lighter than air, similar to smoke. So, a natural gas detector, like a smoke detector, MUST be mounted up high at the ceiling - NOT at counter level, NOT on a shelf and certainly not at a base outlet near the floor. Just a heads up on that, from a retired firefighter. The plug in units imo, are useless, unless the cord is long enough to reach up to the ceiling. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they are 'unsafe' because folks will likely plug them in and set them on a counter or shelf. By the time natural gas builds down that low, the whole house would be filled with gas. I've bought this one to mount in my central heater closet, directly above the unit.(Just as an 'fyi', LP/Propane detectors should be mounted at the floor level (like you will see in an RV); CO/carbon monoxide can go anywhere; Smoke, heat or natural gas detectors must be high, at or near the ceiling. If it's a combination natural gas/CO detector, it has to go at the ceiling; if it's a LP/CO detector it has to go at the floor.) But, don't take my word - always check with a fire official and/or a reputable plumber regarding use & placement of any type of gas detector.

This is a very well-made Natural Gas Alarm. It's extremely easy to install; just make sure to follow the instructions to place it near the ceiling, where natural gas accumulates. This is different from propane detectors, which should be placed near the floor. All test buttons work as expected. However, when I briefly opened the gas for a few seconds, the detector did not go off. This detector requires a 10% gas concentration to trigger an alarm, which is quite high for a simple test. I did not risk leaving the gas on long enough to reach such a threshold. The battery is designed to last for six years, making this detector very convenient to install since it does not require wiring or an outlet, unlike other gas detectors. This is reply from DeNova Support:The DeNova Detect Natural Gas alarm is engineered to alarm after the gas concentration in a room has reached 10% LEL (Lower Explosion Limit), after which it goes into alarm. Exposing the alarm to gas from a stove, even if it is held directly over the stove, will not make it alarm because the alarm threshold of 10% LEL has not been reached. This distinction ensures that our alarms prioritize safety by preventing nuisance alarms from occurring when someone is cooking while effectively alerting to prolonged gas presence. One thing to note is that DeNova Detect alarms are tested to UL1484 standards and all the alarms are tested in gas in the factory before they’re packaged and shipped out. So, you can have peace of mind knowing that your alarm and sensor passed these tests and meets UL1484 standards.

My favorite feature of the DeNova detector is the replaceable lithium battery with a six-year life. The detector itself is easy to install - a zip-tie is included if you want to hang it from a pipe, but I chose to use 3M Command strips to stick it to a cabinet wall in my laundry room. The installation instructions recommend not placing it close to a gas appliance - in my case, a clothes dryer - so I put it in the same room but away from the dryer. I have not, however, tested it by exposing it to gas,

I just received this natural gas alarm and was anxious to set it up as I wanted to confirm my suspicion that I have a gas leak in my boiler room. My frustration is very high due to the problem of getting the battery cover opened. The instructions recognize that force is needed to get the plastic cover off BUT this is insane. I spent more than 30 minutes trying but to no avail. I am not that weak but I feel I'm about to break it due to the force I'm applying but it won't budge. The instructions are very clear on how to remove it. I'll keep trying but it's plain to see that they have a very significant design flaw. Why make it this hard for seniors to use this product.. It makes no sense.

I installed this myself (older woman) without any issues, easy to set up one screw 12 inches from ceiling so easy and gives me peace of mind in the event of a natural gas leak which we unfortunately had this past week. Very dangerous thing! I could smell the gas my husband did not. Don't be without this in your home, everyone should have one in addition to smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Thanks Amazon!

Never thought about having a natural gas alarm in my home until I saw a recent home explosion on the news. Super scary! Now I feel much safer with this DeNova battery alarm in my home to protect all of us and it was really easy to install! I won’t use any electricity and I won’t ever have to change batteries.

This natural gas alarm appears to be good quality. Both the packaging as well as the product seem well thought out. If you are looking for a natural gas alarm with long battery life, this could be a good option.
