NICHE BRAKE SHOE

Brake Shoe

What is a Brake Shoe?

  • Brake shoes carry the brake lining inside brake drum systems. They are a curved piece of metal, with a friction material fixed to one side.
  • When the brake is applied, a wheel cylinder in the drum brake system forces the brake shoe outward, against the inside of the drum.

Differences Between Brake Shoes & Brake Pads

  • Positioning - Being positioned differently in their braking system, Brake pads are placed inside a caliper which surrounds the brake disc and brake shoes are placed inside the brake drum.
  • Wear- Brake shoes typically last much longer than brake pads, Usually they take a much lower proportion of the braking work

Brake Shoe Safety

Why do Brake Shoes Fail?

  • Normal wear & tear caused by friction
  • Contamination of brake shoe friction material. This happens when an axle seal leaks gear oil into the drum area.

Symptoms of Brake Shoe Failure?

  • Dark friction areas
  • Burnt odor
  • Loud squeaking or grinding noises

Awesome product, great quality. Could use a better box but it doesn’t affect the end use. While the description doesn’t say it can be used with a spree, it does fit the front and rear of a Honda spree.

Worked well on my 91 Z50R. When reinstalling I fit the shoes in the cam lobe first, with the end of the spring resting over the dowel. Then flipped upside down and hit with a deadblow hammer and wood. Spring pops right into place with little effort. Hope this helps anyone else dealing with this style of brake shoe.
