Ortofon Concorde MK1 Styli

Physically, each series of DJ styli for Concorde MkI except for S-120, and Concorde MkII will fit on alternate cartridge bodies. However, these combinations are not supported by Ortofon, as each cartridge series is designed with a synergistic combination in mind - that is, each stylus is made to compliment the magnet and coil configuration of each cartridge body. For instance, using CLUB stylus with SCRATCH body will not provide the full benefit of either product, and might even provide undesired results, including (but not limited to) differences in output, unbalanced sound reproduction.

Stylus Removal

How to replace a stylus

Firstly lock the turntable tone arm, unscrew the cartridge, gently remove the stylus from the cartridge and insert a new stylus. A stylus is changed usually by pulling straight out and in the opposite direction of the turntable's arm. If the stylus doesn't come with directions, try these: with one hand, hold the cartridge to steady it. With the other hand, using a pair of tweezers, grasp the stylus from both sides and pull. Install the new stylus: holding the stylus from the top, press it gently into the space at the tip of the cartridge where the old stylus had been. Don't force it.

Stylus cleaning

Proper care comprises the following:

Cleaning of record by means of carbon fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.

Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip and never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.

Proper adjustment of antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.

Spherical vs Elliptical

Spherical vs Ellpitical

The physical difference between a spherical and elliptical stylus is the shape of the diamond.

An elliptical diamond allows for more detailed sound quality, as it fits better within the groove and therefore has more contact area with the groove itself. Elliptical diamonds penetrate the groove walls further, extracting more intricate detail, especially in the high end, than is possible with a spherical diamond. It is commonly misrepresented that elliptical styli cause more wear than spherical styli.

In fact, spherical styli, since they have a smaller contact area and more pressure, cause more immediate wear than elliptical styli, but in a smaller area of the groove itself. Elliptical styli, since they have more weight distribution amongst a larger contact area, will wear the groove slower, but will wear more of the groove over repeated backcueing.

My story, yes, there is one. I inherited a nice Technics turntable from a friend several years ago. At the time, I didn't really take notice of the cartridge and stylus, it just worked. The turntable just worked, yay. Damaged the existing stylus in a move, found it was a Ortofon 20, $200 bucks to replace it. Being short of funds, I opted for the Pro S, and it does the job.My hearing isn't the best, so I can't hear the subtleties between a $200 stylus and a $30 stylus. Maybe I could side by side. Anyway, this stylus does the job, I'm happy with it, and can listen to my albums. if only I'd invested in diamonds, then I wouldn't see $200 as a issue. What most impressed me is the speed by which Amazon got the shipment to me. Faster than advertised. If only other unnamed companies, like a certain G company, would get a frigging clue about the fact that customer happiness is directly proportionate to the speed by which packages are delivered. It ain't rocket science. Thanks Ortofon for making a decent stylus and thanks Amazon for providing stellar service.

If you have old ortofon cartridges, these styli are the ones for you. As we all know, stylii wear out after use (and dirty records). These are the base model, and I can’t tell the difference between the “nightclub” versions and these. I’m glad ortofon is still manufacturing these the way they used to. Don’t mess with a great design!

Otofon cartriges and stylii are for the audiophile. They're among the finest. But, the finest is almost always the most expensive. I'm a serious classical musician, and I seek for the best in my audio equipment. I have a collection of 33's going back to over 50 years ago. I enjoy listening to them, but I want to protect them. The Ortofon is about the lightest tracking stylus for the lightest tracking cartrige available. Phono records have lost their popularity due to the emergence of CD's. So one would naturally expect phono stylii to go up in price . . . and they have . . . very much so. While shopping around, I was looking at various stylii for my Ortofon cartrige, while comparing prices. I was surprised and delighted when I found this stylus for about 1/4 to 1/5 the price of others with identical specifications. I've had it for quite a while now, have used it a lot, and it works great. FANTASTIC STYLUS AT A FANTASTIC PRICE!!

For 30 bucks, cant complain. It doesnt sound as good as an elliptical but for a straight tone arm you can only use spherical with the Ortofons, so.... here we are! Its a good deal really and its ortofon quality, great sound.

I had been trying for several days to find replacement cartridges for my OM5e that didn't require overseas shipping or purchasing the entire unit for twice the price. I ended up settling for this model since I just couldn't get what I wanted and it was available for Prime Shipping. Threw it on my Orbit turntable when it arrived and it's an acceptable substitution. The only thing I'm concerned about is I hear the Pro S stylus wears out faster but will just have to keep an eye out for that in the near future...

A pleasant surprise replacement for an OM 10H stylus and performance almost give the Shure M97xe a little bit competition when mounted on a linear tracking old Technics. Ok the linear tracking tone arms is superior than the straight and S tone arm in many ways and elevated the performance but it still have to be a good stylus/cartridge to begin with. So I say well worth the money in my case
