Thunbergia (Thunbergia Alata Sunrise White)

This Thunbergia annual is commonly called Black-Eyed Susan Vine. This white Black Eyed Susan vine is very quick to bloom, offers a super-long season of color, and has a classic color pattern that complements everything in the garden! The blooms reach about 1 1/2 inches in diameter when open wide. The petals are white, surrounding a bold black eye on most blooms. The blooms are profuse, smothering the vine over a long bloom season clear up until frost!

White Thunbergia vines grows best in full sun. They need average, well-drained soil. Space plants 8 - 12 inches apart. Pinch the tips of young Black-Eyed Susan plants to encourage branching. In areas of no frost, white Thunbergia vine will grow as a perennial. In colder climates, grow it as an annual, sowing the Thunbergia seeds each year. If grown in a container, Thunbergia Black Eyed Susan vine can be wintered indoors in a bright, sunny window.

How to Grow

It is recommended to soak the Black-eyed Susan vine seeds over night in tepid water. Following the soaking, sow Thunbergia seeds outdoors after the last frost in prepared seed bed.

Or, to get a jump start on the growing season, sow Thunbergia Alata seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before outdoor planting. Thunbergia flower seeds germinate better in darkness.

Plant seedlings 3 inches away from supports. Netting or strings make good trellis material. Solid fencing or large posts will need trellis material for the vine to climb.

Not a very good germination or growth rate. Most disappointing was that I ordered white, but they bloomed pale yellow.

I’ve had close to a 100% success rate with these seeds! I have always had good luck with this seed company!

The were 100 seeds in the package, but so far only 3 are viable. I wasn't sure if I should soak the seeds overnight before planting them, so I worked with about 20 seeds first. I got three sprouts from that first batch. I did the same with the remaining seeds and nothing has come up in two weeks. I believe that these are very old seeds packets, though there is no expiration date stamp on the packet.

Germination rate below 5% - the company believes the seed was good and my growth process was bad.I'm a Master Gardner with 50+ years of experience and a greenhouse bulging at the seams with plants that I grow from seed.I think that I got bad seeds....another packet of seeds from this company, for a different plant had a 100% germination rate......

Some of my flowers were not "black-eyed". I wonder if it was my growing conditions?

These turned out to be orange, not white. I usually have good luck with Outside Pride seeds. Sad.
