Product Description

The Panamax M5300-PM 11-Outlet Home Theater Power Conditioner provides surge and over- and under-voltage protection and 12-volt trigger input for delayed outlets . It has front-panel digital voltmeter and ampmeter and 11 AC outlets with five isolated filter banks, 3 coaxial RF and 2 pairs of Ethernet inputs and outputs plus additional phone line, front-panel USB charger and Ethernet jack.

From the Manufacturer

Level 4 Power Cleaning and Linear Filtration eliminates common symptoms of contaminated power (including loss of detail, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts) and allows your A/V equipment to perform up to its full capability. Panamax’s patent pending AVM circuitry continuously monitors the incoming power as displayed on the digital voltmeter. In case of an undervoltage or an overvoltage, a flashing lightning bolt will be displayed in red in the voltmeter, and power to the connected equipment is automatically turned off if either of these conditions is detected. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected.
The M5300-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between 5 isolated outlet banks including 2 high current outlets so that any noise created by an A/V component can not contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into another outlet bank.

Improve Your Picture and Sound Quality While Protecting Your Home Theater Investment

All the features you need to keep your system running clean and safe

Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT)
For improving picture and sound quality nothing filters AC noise better. LiFT evenly eliminates noise across the entire bandwidth, ensuring peak audio and video performance by reducing harmonic distortion and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. With LiFT, you are assured consistent performance and the highest resolution from any audio or video playback system. Your audio/video components are constantly being bombarded by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) through their AC power source. This contaminated power can affect audio/video equipment and will degrade the overall performance of your entire system. Common symptoms of contaminated power include loss of picture detail, dull colors, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts.
Automatic Over and Under Voltage Protection (AVM)
Panamax's patent pending power monitoring circuitry constantly monitors the AC line voltage for unsafe voltage conditions such as momentary spikes or prolonged over-voltages and under-voltages (brownouts). These unsafe conditions pose a very dangerous threat to all electronic equipment within the home. If the M5300-PM senses an unsafe power condition, it will automatically disconnect your equipment from the power to protect equipment from damage.Once the voltage returns to a safe level, the M5300-PM will automatically reconnect the power. When subjected to a 6,000V (open circuit voltage) / 500A (short circuit current) surge, the M5300-PM limits its voltage output to less than 330V peak, UL's best rating. If the magnitude of the surge is greater than the capacity of the surge protection components, the M5300-PM's Protect or Disconnect Circuitry will disconnect your equipment in order to protect it. The M5300-PM will need to be repaired or replaced by Panamax if this occurs within the product’s 3 year warranty.
Five Isolated Outlet Banks
The M5300-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between the outlet banks so that any noise created by A/V components plugged into the M5300-PM cannot contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into the other outlet banks of the M5300-PM.
Sequential Startup/Shutdown
Complex audio/video systems may be susceptible to voltage transients generated internally at start-up/shutdown if all of the equipment is powered on or off at the same time. This can cause speaker "thumps" which are not only annoying but can also damage the speakers and/or trip product circuit breakers. The M5300-PM is designed to eliminate these transients by providing a "start-up" delay for the High-Current outlets and a "shutdown" delay for the Switched Outlet Banks. This minimizes in-rush current issues by allowing the components plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks to power-up and stabilize before any amplifiers and powered sub-woofers are turned on. This sequence is reversed during shutdown. The amplifiers and powered subwoofers turn off, their power supplies drain, and then the equipment plugged into the Switched Outlet Banks are turned off.
USB Charger and LAN
The M5300-PM features a front panel convenience charger for mp3 players, cell phones, video game controllers, and other small electronics. (NOTE: Some devices may not be compatible with this USB charger.) There's also an easy-to-access LAN port pass-thru from the rear panel to the front panel for online gaming as well as a convenience outlet located on the front panel for gaming systems and other electronics.
Voltage Sense Trigger
The M5300-PM voltage sense trigger input uses a standard 3.5mm (1/8") mini-mono plug. This feature provides an ON/OFF trigger for the M5300-PM using a Direct Current voltage signal. Many components such as pre-amplifiers and receivers have a DC trigger built in, and will transmit a constant power signal when turned on and in use. The presence of this power signal will turn on the M5300- PM's switched outlets. When the source component is turned off, the voltage trigger signal is also turned off and the M5300-PM's shutdown sequence is initiated. An AC Adapter of the appropriate voltage plugged into a switched outlet may also be used if a DC trigger is not built in.
Protection for Cable/Satellite/Antenna, LAN, and Telephone
Coaxial protection circuits achieve optimum signal quality from our new coaxial protectors that have the smallest signal loss on the market - less than 0.5 db of attenuation from 0 MHz to 2.2 GHz. Our upgraded coaxial protection has been specifically designed to virtually eliminate signal loss. The clamping level of 75V will meet the demands of both cable and satellite voltage while minimizing exposure to damaging spikes and surges.
Digital video recorders and satellite TV receivers require a telephone line connection for TV show scheduling and/or Pay-Per-View services. The M5300-PM provides surge protection for this utilizing one pair of RJ-11 telephone jacks is provided for this. The circuitry utilizes auto-resetting PTCRs and solidstate SIDACtors for reliability and unsurpassed protection. The clamping level of the M5300- PM's telephone protector is 260 volts. This will allow typical ring voltage (90-130VAC) and operating battery voltage (-48DC) to pass through the circuit and still protect the modem in your satellite receiver from damage.
Protection circuits for 10/100 baseT Ethernet lines. Incoming LAN line MUST be plugged into the LINE jack. Patch cord to the equipment MUST be plugged into the EQUIP jacks. 1 LAN jack goes to the front panel gaming port. 8 wire protection, 52V clamping.

The M5300 provides reliable power protection for mid-sized home theater systems

I'll start with the surprising good news about this unit - after plugging my HT system components into this device, the picture got brighter on the high-end Sony TV. This was an unexpected shock to the two people who witnessed it because we both spontaneously noticed the picture quality change at the same time, and both of us are very suspicious of snake oil related claims. The power outlet I'm forced to use for our system is on the far end of a GFCI device, so that might be related (for one thing, I can't run ethernet over powerline with this outlet). We run the unit as always-on and control power to the components individually, so I can't speak to the timed shutdown and startup features. We don't have tube equipment or anything that needs to warm up. Our OLED TV prefers to have power at all times even when "off" so it can do panel self-maintenance and download firmware updates, and it controls the soundbar and subwoofer and rear speakers so there's no need for sequencing there. The streaming boxes (Roku, Apple) take little power, and the DVD player is turned on only when being used. So the Panamax is always on.I like the front meters that show both volts and amps, but the quality of the blue LEDs that light the meters is questionable - they are a bit cheap looking and the brightness adjustments are not sufficiently adjustable. This is in contrast to the rest of the unit which feels very solid and well built. The utility value of including protection for phone (landlines) and ethernet is questionable - if you can't provide protection at the point of entry into your house then they are mostly useless. Most HT systems are not located at the same place in the house as the point of entry for the phone lines and primary internet connection. The days of these kinds of things being useful are waning - I'd rather have another pair of outlets. Ditto for the USB port on the front - I've already got plenty of ways to charge my phone. When contemplating this box, I'm most of all interested solely in 120VAC power conditioning. There has been no transformer buzzing or any other kind of noise from the unit I got - it has been utterly silent at all times. We've had no power problems so far that would trip the over- or under-voltage reactions so I can't address how this unit behaves when something like that happens. And I hope I never have to. But the cost of this unit was about 10% of the cost of the electronic components it is protecting, so it feels like worthwhile insurance.*Update 03/05/2024* This product now costs $750, which is $300 more than when I bought it less than 3 months ago.

I was concerned about a couple of reports of a "Loud Buzzing" coming from the unit but mine had no loud buzzing. Having an electrical generator featured on the 5400 vs the 5300 I wanted that extra protection during surges. I put my ear against the unit itself and heard a minimal hum (Normal) and if I turned off all items (tv, frig, furnace, etc) I could barely hear a low hum at 1' but nothing beyond that and certainly nothing noticeable. Plugged everything in and still quiet. I sit 8' feet away and nothing at all so I'm not sure what people are referring to. This replaced my 22-year-old Panamax 5500-ex (Their flagship unit back in 2002) which finally gave out saving all of my very expensive components 65" Sony Bravia tv, Sony sacd player, Panasonic UHDTV & Denon S950H receiver. Served me very well so sticking with their flagship unit. Peace of mind and 4 dimmable options down to a few tiny blue led lights just the perfect ambience no distraction. Oh... great price too for what it does and features you get. No brainer.

Had to replace an older model that finally died after tons of power surges over the years. It took one storm too many but my entertainment center still runs great! This newer model seems like it will protect my system for years to come.

1/2/13 Update: Protection confirmed again! And, again, no simple surge protector would have done this. We experienced a very strange power outage. It appeared to begin with a surge followed by voltage dropping from 120V to 60V (where it remained for about an hour). The Panamax immediately cut the power to everything plugged into it and did not pass the 60V of power through to any of the devices during the outage. Low voltage (below 108V) can also harm electronics! For the rest of my devices (refrigerator, dishwasher, etc.) I had to manually trip the breakers so as to avoid damage to those devices. In the end (other than one CFL bulb), everything seemed to work normally (whether plugged into the Panamax or not). But, this sort of damage is cumulative and not always immediately evident. So, I'd say it is safe to assume that -- at a minimum -- the devices plugged into the Panamax had their life expectancy extended.7/26/10 Update: The voltage anomaly occurred! This weekend, my electric company -- with no apparent external factors involved -- pushed 125 to 127 volts into my home for the entire weekend (122 to 124 is normal for them). At 127 volts, the Buck stage kicked in and reduced the voltage to 117. The Buck stage continued to supply reduced voltage until the input voltage dropped to 123. The CBEMA curve suggests that computer equipment (and, presumably, other electronic equipment) is designed to function properly at plus or minus 10% of 120 volts. However, functioning properly is one thing and sustaining damage over time is another. This Panamax product is designed to keep the voltage within plus or minus 5% of 120 volts. This weekend, the product performed as advertised. In doing so, it might have prolonged the life of my home theater equipment. No simple surge protector could do that.Original review follows:Until a voltage anomaly occurs, it is hard to know how this unit performs. But, I have no reason to doubt the listed specifications. Based upon those specifications, this unit should provide far, FAR better protection than a simple surge protector. And, it appears to be a far better value than even the entry level voltage regulator from Monster, inc (the AVS 2000). The online manual for the AVS 2000 -- unlike this Panamax -- offers very few specifics on voltage regulation. Here in the wild, wild west, various critters tend to find their way into our electrical grid, thereby shorting things out in sometimes spectacular ways and creating all sorts of havoc, voltage anomalies and blackouts. The damage suffered by my previous A/V system -- then protected by a high quality surge protector -- may well have been caused by these errant critters. My hope and expectation is that this unit will substantially prolong the useful life of my new A/V system.Subjectively speaking, this unit does seem to have improved the picture and sound quality. But, I did not do any side-by-side testing.
