for canning, pickling (food preservation) I feel a lot better having this as a safety check.it's also an indispensable tool if one is taking a molecular gastronomy approachI suspect I'll find more uses as I go on, like a thermometer, it's nice to get a quantitative on a fundamental parameter.While this was sent to me for review, I take that job seriously. Getting people the wrong product is wasteful, irresponsible and a hassle for everyone.Not everything I review gets high marks -- BTW, I live in a high sales tax state, review items aren't exactly at-no-cost for me]

This is a nice pH meter. Easy to clean and use. The readings are very quick. I don’t have to let the meter sit in the item I am testing. I recommend this for food.

The instructions are a bit unclear and gives you instructions for mixing a powder but the package we received either it was already mixed with liquid or it came as a liquid. I did follow the calibration instructions and tested my product and did get my desired reading.

I recently made some hot sauce that I thought was shelf-stable, but really had no way to know. This device helped take measurements of that hot sauce to let me know what I need to do. The directions were a bit confusing at first, though, for the calibration which is the first thing you have to do. The directions mention dissolving a powder in water. There is no powder in this kit, only liquid vials with pH levels labeled on them and another solution. After much discussion with my husband about this, we determined that we should just test in the liquid provided - no additional dilution. I was able to get *close* readings to within one one-hundredth of a decimal point, which I thought was pretty close. The meter kept ticking up, strangely, when taking the readings though. This was for both the acid and base. The other solution in there is to use in the cap on stem of the device. There's a very tiny sponge-like thing all the way in the tip of the cap. That needs to stay moist, which is what the solution is for, I believe. Overall, I'm happy with this and will definitely use when I can/preserve foods to know if it's safe. If you want this to take ultra precise measurements, I'm not sure this will do it for you.

Bought it to make sure my kombucha batches are acidic enough to prevent the bad bugs from growing. Once you get it calibrated, this product works really well. Recommend.
