Perpetual motion in action

A cute and funny looking bird that will never stop drinking water. This is an incredible toy that has been a childhood favorite for decades. This toy is perfect for both children and adults. Have this toy become a great example of thermodynamics and the concept of perpetual motion. Use this for a physics lesson or office desk toy.

moving water bird

How does this toy work:

Assemble the bird by inserting the metal bar on the bird's neck into the holes of the bird's legs. Find a small glass of water that is smaller than the legs. Place the bird in front of the glass and tilt the head into the water. Adjust the height of the bird to have it bob back and forth. Watch as the bird continuously drinks the water, and maintain a temperature of 25°C/76°F to achieve best results.

office and home decoration

A toy evolved from scientific invention

A vintage and novelty toy that has been a childhood favorite for many years. Originally an invention used in thermodynamics and physics studies to demonstrate evaporation. Decades later, this became a novelty favorite by children of all ages.

The first drinking bird I received didn’t work. I tried all the suggested adjustments. I requested a replacement and the seller made it right. The new one works perfectly and adds a lot of enjoyment for my grandchildren!

The arms that the bird pivots on have a rough edge preventing proper operation. I filed the edge smooth and waxed the pivot point on the the leg. Once the height was set to 2.8 inches the bird works as expected. Its a fun toy to watch. Easy to see the difference in operation as external temperature changes. As shown and worth the bucks. Appearance is as shown.

This drinking bird desk toy was a gift and arrived with the hat broken off of it's head. I filled out the Amazon return/replacement form and another one arrived very quickly and works perfectly. Return of the broken one went smoothly.

This is at most 5 inches tall. Didn't bother opening the box to see if it was well-made--back it went.

I always wanted one of these when I was a kid; I remember calling them "Dinky Ducks". After reading all the negative reviews I almost didn't order one but the cost was such that I got one, and it works great. I'm really not sure what all the people were complaining about. It took a few minutes to get the Duck positioned correctly in the steel collar but once I found the "sweet spot" it just keeps dunking. I have it sitting on the stand below where my tv is mounted on the wall and it's sort of relaxing watching the duck doing what it does, I'm very happy with it.

So cool bought just for the hell of it and I'm impressed. Dunk his head in that cup of water and then he'll continuously drink until the water gets too low.

Works well but a fragile item. And a bit expensive too.

I used to maintain my one of these as a kid about 50 years ago. So glad they are still around. Works on such clever balance of the elements physics, temperature, pressure and evaporation. Great talking point for adults or kids to understand what is going on. FYI, the when the fabric in the head is wet it evaporates and cools the top bubble where the head is, this causes the air inside to shrink in simple terms which draws the liquid up from bottom bubble, which after a while causes the centre of gravity to go to head then the bird tips and takes a drink (which keeps the head wet), but when it is horizontal the liquid falls back down the straw tube body back in the base and it all starts again as when upright there is a vacuum again... etc. Very cool whoever thought of it!
