About this item

  • Dampens resonance from metal turntable platters
  • Enhances bass response
  • Individually hand cut
  • Double sided - Leather Grain and Suede -2 mats in one

After getting fed up with dust and static spoiling my audio experience, I decided to do something about it. The factory rubber and felt mats seemed to contribute to the problem, so I began a search for a new material. After much experimentation, I found my answer. Deer hide. It is fantastic! So supple and buttery soft. Not only is my static gone, but the bass response is enhanced and there is additional sound dampening from the motor, as well. The overwhelming majority of reviewers (myself included) even swear it makes their records sound better. I hand cut each piece which enables me to work around natural flaws, bumps, nicks, and fluctuations in thickness to create a uniform, defect free mat. I punch the center hole slightly smaller to create a tight fit warding off any mat slippage. With my setup, I like to use the leather grain side up. Through this process, I believe I've found what works best, and most importantly, what SOUNDS best. All leather is not created equally. Hides vary in quality, thickness, feel etc. I've made it my mission to find the best hides for our audio purposes. I emphasize that I use deer hide because it is twice as expensive per square foot than the leather used for some other cheaper turntable mats I've seen. I would much rather explain the price of my mats than apologize for the quality. Like the Model T Ford, you can have any color you want so long as it's black. ( I am actually doing a very limited run of chocolate brown. I found a gorgeous hide that looks especially great on wood paneled turntables). The mats are right about 1/8 of an inch thick and 11.5 inches in diameter. When you order a turntable mat from me, what you're getting is a beautiful, handcrafted piece of material which will not only help eliminate dust and static issues, but also improve fidelity. Thanks for looking! Jake

I'm using this mat on an AR/XA table and have done for over a year. I really would have preferred to use a cork mat (generally, I prefer cork or rubber on a direct drive table) and hadn't considered a leather mat of any kind, but such mats are always too thick. The XA, as great a table as it has been for me, has no VTA adjusting of any kind and so I'm locked into a particular mat thickness. The stock mat has survived from the 50s but I started to suspect that it was shedding fibers. So I was a click away from getting a rubber mat when, on a whim, I bought this one. This mat turns out to be equivalent in thickness to the original and it is far cleaner (and easy to spot dust) than either of the other mats I've used. I can't say that it is static proof, though it's at least as good as the stock mat has ever been. For me, the best mat material is cork all the way around, but they're just too dang thick for that table. I have to say, I always thought leather tt mats were a bit gimicky but I can't deny the results: Great sound, good alignment, and good antistat properties. Good mass too, for sound dampening my aluminum platter (not as good as rubber, but it's far better than felt or even cork in this regard). All of that and it definitely feels like a premium product (more so than a rubber mat, say) fit for the beautiful table on which it sits. One small gripe: for use on an XA table, the center spindle hole is slightly too small. this can cause the material to bunch a bit at the center. The issue is purely cosmetic and one could cut or holepunch out a slightly larger center hole if it bothered them. Every mat has this problem on this particular table, not to mention newer records as well, so it's really more an issue of outdated build standards. But it would be nice were there an option for a mat with a very slightly larger center spindle hole. Overall, this has been an essential addition to my table and this mat is sure to last for years and years. Jake makes a quality product and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

So originally I was looking for a cork mat to solve my static issues, but I just really did not care for the look, so I opted for leather, and seeing the great reviews for this mat, decided to give it a shot. Aesthetically, the mat looks fantastic! High quality leather, very symmetrical, no rough or frayed edges and extremely soft. Of course as noted by other reviewers, the personal note and old record sleeve shipped with it are great touches that make you feel like the mat was custom made just for you! As far performance goes, static almost completely eliminated. I have only had the chance to listen to some newer records in my collection, but the bass definitely seems to be more clear, tighter and warmer than my felt mat. Anxious to put on some old favorites that I am really familiar with to observe just how much the sound quality is improved. This was a great purchase, and though maybe slightly more expensive than a cork mat, totally worth it!

This mat really does improve the sound of my vinyl. Saw a U Tube video about different turntable mat and I really liked the look and function of this mat. Not going to lie, I was a little skeptical, but after using this mat on my Fluance RT85 N turntable, I can't see playing vinyl without it.The one minor design thought I have is, I'd like to see the mat just a bit lager. This so the mat completely cover the platter of the turntable. But never let this stop you from buying this most excellent turntable mat. The quality and workmanship if superior, and the price is very fair. Buy this mat, you won't be disappointed.

After installed Nagaoka MP150 cartridge and changing cheap interconnects for Bluejeans cables, the stock mat seemed like the next upgrade for my Technics SL-D2.OEM rubber mat is not bad by any means, but the bass was muddying the vocals, and treble felt harsh in some albums. And, yeah, static sometimes.I did quite some research, and found that The Funk Firm Achromat ($99), the Herbie’s Way Excellent Mat (from $59.99), and Jake’s Deer Hide Mat ($29) were the best rated turntable mats in the market.I decided to give Jake’s mat a first shot, not only because it was the cheapest, but because some reviewers mentioned improvement on the issues above.Once I received it, I realized this was honest quality. It seems like a completely thought out artisan product, from the package proposal to the material quality. This mat gives a balanced, enjoyable, "tap your feet” presentation across all frequencies, and tame that harshness in the highs without loosing sense of detail. It also gives the right amount of bass, and, by extension, cleans the midrange. Now vocals sound less congested and distant and fast bass lines are more easy to hear. Though not completely eliminated, there are less static issues. Like some reviewers, I came to this conclusion after A to B comparisons using LP’s I’m extremely familiar with. Is not night and day difference, but more cherry on the cake difference.Given the amount of rave reviews, seems like this is not a system dependent mat. I think it would do a good job within the limits of a nice budget system like mine, and could help even on a not that budget one. Maybe I’ll try Achromat and Herbie’s mats in the future, but now I’m perfectly served with this one.Regardless of any audiophile criteria, I think Jake’s Mat renders the kind of sound and vibe that always makes me want to hear another LP. And that's what this hobby is all about.

The fit around the arbor is snug, one side is unfinished like suede the other side is finished grain. fits well and looks great.I noticed that the circle is not perfect but it is very close and gives the mat that hand crafted touch. As long as this level of quality is there I will continue to replace my turntable mats with Jake’s mats!

I've been on the hunt for the perfect slip mat for my turntable. I've tried rubber, cork and acrylic before giving Jake's deer hide mat a try after reading some great reviews. I have static issues so anti-static was a prominent feature I was looking for. My acrylic mat did a decent job with static and was my go-to until along came Jake's mat. It truly is the best anti-static slip mat I've found to date and the personal touch of these mats goes a long way. Also, being leather, it provides a better grip than acrylic (my biggest complaint). Handmade by Jake and accompanied by a personal handwritten thank you note. On Amazon of all places!?Listen, I read several reviews claiming it does nothing for their static issues, and quite frankly, that surprises me. From time to time, you will get a bit of static but for the most part, I lift my records off the table with ZERO static! I'm inclined to question the system setup for individuals who still experience static problems. Furthermore, my mat fits my table perfectly but if yours happens to be cut poorly as some reviewers indicate, then return it and get a replacement. By the sounds of it, Jake cares about his product and would have no issue making you a new one. Honestly, I'd give this slip mat a go for the price point. Great value!

This mat is well made and looks great. But more importantly, it has greatly reduced the effect of static during playback of my LPs. I've hardly heard a pop or a click since I started using the mat which makes it more than worth the price to me. There has also been an improvement in the sound, including a slight bass enhancement. I've found the mat is best used suede side up as the smooth side gets a tad sticky if it's warm. Loved the packaging (an old LP sleeve) and accompanying note from the seller. So this one gets top marks from me.
