I like that this is metal. It feels much more sturdy than the plastic one we had in the ice maker that the handle broke off... stainless would have been better. But that's on me for not seeing the part where it said it was aluminum. They came shiny-ish but the coating already looks scuffed all over the place. So I imagine won't stay that way for long. Good enough for a nice cheap scoop I guess. But don't buy if presentation is important. I will say as with other reviews the handle is EXTREMELY short. You can get it by maybe 2 fingers. Might be able to grip a bit more if you have small hands. Mine are medium and it is a wee uncomfortable. So glad it's just for quick scooping ice.

I like these "shovels" to use around my home as they are very practical. One lives in my baking soda bucket and use it to dig up baking soda and use it for cleaning purposes. The other one lives in my kitchen to shovel up ice cubes on a hot day.

I unpackaged these and washed them and within one wash they had oxidized, turned dull gray and were leeching out gray powdery stuff all over our hands. They were completely unusable right out of the box and are garbage. I have to throw them away! Complete waste of money.

As other reviews have noted, these are non-stainless, cast aluminum scoops. Meaning, if you wash them in the dishwasher and let them dry by heat they WILL oxidize and blacken and develop a nasty grey haze. That haze can be mostly washed/wiped off but the material will be left with a sandy type feel.This isn't any different from the low quality ice cream scoops of the old days that would do the same thing. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of ingesting aluminum oxidization in the things I might scoop with these scoops though so it's unlikely I will use them from ice or anything else that might get them wet again.Just be aware, if you're buying these for ice or anything else that's wet, spend a little more money and get true stainless steel and not cast aluminum scoops.
