The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

They didn't break so what can I say. Grade 2 bolts. If the price is right and you don't want to drive to the store, get some. They work just like lag bolts.

These are good strong lag screws with good zinc plating, but the measurement is from the top of the cap (the complete length of the screw) rather than the length of the shank and threads, which is the standard way of measuring screws. These are 1 3/8 inch screws, not 1 1/2 inch lag screws. I returned them and ordered their 2 inch screws, which turn out to be 1 7/8 inch screws.
