Absolutely necessary for a gas fireplace. Man what a difference this in addition to the lava rock on top of the sand made. The flame is spread out better so my fireplace doesn't look like a gas stove and the hiss is almost completely muffled so I can actually enjoy the fire and how much more natural it looks.

We live 75 miles from a local supplier of Peterson Fireplaces. We wanted to get the authentic sand to replace what we had in our fireplace. This was a great solution for us.

It's exactly as described. Sand. But made for the constant heat.I needed to replace the sand that was lost from cleaning our gas fireplace. I had a really hard time finding silica sand made for the fireplace in Canada. This product is expensive but a price to pay for ease of mind. Sand not made for the heat could melt into clumps, block the gas and become dangerous.Product has been great so far. The fire is spreading a lot more even than before where the fire was concentrating into certain area and shooting up the ceramic firelogs.
