Woman using RIT Color Fixative

ColorStay Dye Fixative

We want your dye projects to stand the test of time. ColorStay Dye Fixative, an easy-to-use solution designed to lock in color, keeping your fabrics looking their best and brightest for the long run. It reduces bleeding, fading and even enhances the color of your project. Use after dyeing to lock in color. Or use it immediately after a tie-dye or dip-dye project to prevent dye from bleeding into white areas.

Adding RIT Dye Fixative to a Pot

  1. For every pound of dry fabric (i.e. two adult large t-shirts), use 4 ounces of ColorStay Dye Fixative with 3 gallons of water.
  2. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with hot tap water. Pour well-shaken ColorStay Dye Fixative into container or sink. Mix well.
  3. Wearing rubber gloves, add ColorStay Dye Fixative to bath

Adding Clothing to the Pot with RIT Dye Fixative

4. Add fabric to bath.

5. Stir slowly and continuously on and off for 20 minutes. If you dyed the clothing, it is very likely that unbonded dye that is still on the fabric will end up in the bath. That is completely normal and will not alter the results.

Jean comparison after using RIT Dye Fixative

6. Rinse in cool water.

7. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

I had a couple of pairs of olive-colored shorts that had small bleach spots but were otherwise in good condition. I came across this product and decided to give it a shot instead of throwing out the shorts, even though the label disclaimed that the product may not work on some bleach stains. The first time I tried to dye the shorts, I failed. Why? I didn't follow the instructions and only stirred the pants/dye mixture a couple of times. Although the dye took, there were a couple of places where the dye was lighter.Having learned my lesson, I tried again. This time, I constantly stirred for thirty minutes. I also let the pants/dye mixture soak overnight. This time, they came out great. I also used the dye fixative and pre-washed the shorts before washing them with other clothes. The picture I uploaded is of one pair of shorts after several washings, and the color has not diminished.

I love rit dye! I purchased some tan shorts that were too warm for my skin tone. I was able to use rit to cool it down. I love the new color of my shorts!

The main issue with this dye (and, probably, all dyes) is that, once fabric gets bleach spots, the dye application will not be uniform unless you take special steps. At that point, you may opt to simply buy a replacement of whatever fabric it was.I did use the washing machine method since I was dyeing a large quantity of fabric (6 chair cushions). I simply reset the timer so that the fabric was agitated for 30 minutes. If your machine has different settings, you probably want to set it to agitate faster. The fixative definitely makes a difference and I would not recommend you to skip it. My result was acceptable, but not perfect.

Worked like a charm to dye a wig-tail for a Harley Quinn costume. Easy to use and arrived new. Haven't used the Colorstay yet, but the red dye was as advertised. Would 100% use again

I purchased this die brand because I’ve always trusted it. I did some neat tie die projects with my friends with great results!

I really wanted this to work on my faded nylon outdoor cushions! I made sure to get the right dye for nylon fabric and followed the instructions to a T. I prepared the dye bath in VERY hot water (nearly boiling) with the requisite amount of vinegar. Put my pre-washed cushion covers into the double- dye bath (an entire bottle in 3 gallons of very hot water). 30 minutes later, no change in the fabric color. Checked again after 2 hrs and still nothing. Fell asleep and forgot to remove them from the dye bath. Didn't empty it until amost 12 hours later, and not a single thread had changed color. But i can say the dye does work because every little droplet that spilled on my Beige bathroom counter, Beige carpet and Beige skin, is now a permanent shade of deep, dark purple. It won't come of the counter even after dabbing with bleach. The carpet is ruined and it took 3 days and multiple skin scrubbings to get it off of my upper arms and toes! There won't be a next time for me, but if you do attempt to use this, do yourself a huge favor, cover all your surfaces, wear long sleeves and cover your toes! :(

This works as described. Search for and watch the videos. I used it on two sweaters and it made them new again.

Rit dye is good! Price was good, I didn't have to leave the house to go get. Easy. Didn't get the exact colour I wanted but it still looks great.

I used this in my washing machine. The colour came out even, but was a lot lighter than the swatch showed. I redid the piece, blending this colour with a bottle of navy. It's still not as dark as I hoped, but it's adequate.
