This is a really nice gauge. I was suprised at the quality of this tool. It is solid well made and nicley finished right out of the box no tuning required. It also arrived Before the items from the same order that shipped form amazon. this is the 1st time I have ordered form Rockler but it will not be the last. Good tool I am going to buy a couple more before they raise the price.

Based on price and availability i bought this product. Although never using one previously i felt that this was the right choice for me. It appears well made and easy to use. Finish is good and does what it suppposed to. That was what i wanted. I would recommend to others.

sure makes marking stuff easier. throw one of these in your toolbox and see if it does not come out of your box and find a permanent place on your workbench.

Solid, well built but the markings are shallow and it is in millimeters.

I'll preface my review by saying that I am only a novice woodworker, and so my review should not be held higher than others with more experience.I have been practicing my joinery skills over the last few months and noticed that I was having a difficult time lining up the depth of my dovetail cuts. At the time I was just using the two boards that would become the pins and tails to mark cut depths, but apparently I lack the basic skill of drawing straight lines...I was reading an old woodworking manual that had been passed down to me and I saw pictures of a marking gauge, and so I went on Amazon and ordered this one because it was cheap, but looked solid enough that it wouldn't fall apart. The gauge is made of brass, and is well constructed. The mass of the instrument makes me think that I will still be able to use it decades from now. The brass slider locks to the long pin by a hand tightened screw which has a large knurled know on the end so it is easy to adjust. The pin also has inch markings on it, which are actually engraved so they won't rub off over time. The business end has a brass(?) wheel on the end which is supposed to be relatively sharp. I say 'supposed' because my it is pretty dull on my particular marking gauge. The nice thing is that it is held on by a screw so it's possible to take it off and sharpen it (something I haven't done yet, as I am mostly working with soft pine). All in all, I am very happy with the tool and think it's a good value and will last many years if cared for. My only complaint is the dull marking wheel, but as I said above, I believe it could be sharpened rather easily.

The marking gauge wheel fails to mark. I took the wheel off and tried sharpening it using a set of diamond hones that went to 4000 grit. No luck. I tried sharpening the wheel with sandpaper. No luck. To sharpen the wheel I placed it face down and pushed it back and forth with my finger and a pencil eraser to hold it flat. The edge of the wheel felt sharp, but the so-called line it left was almost impossible to see. I marked the same piece of wood - a 2x4 - with a Veritas marking gauge, a wheel type, and it left an excellent mark. The gauge is worthless.AD2
