My client came in with an American Fender Precision Bass. It was less than a year old. He's in a busy gigging band. He requested larger side dots, as the factory ones were difficult to see on stage. I suggested a few options and included glow-in-the-dark side dots. He liked the idea of the glow-in-the-dark dots. I was going to order the 2.5mm ones from AllParts, but they were temporarily out of stock. I thought checking on Amazon would have results. I found the Luminlay SBM & SGM series/with black pipe / 60mm length (inner 2.5mm, outside 4mm, in glow Green and Blue). They are the same GITD side dots found on the Charvel San Dimas Pro Mods. My client was excited and chose the blue. The final result looks stunning (the black ring around the center really makes it pop visually), and my client was thrilled.

I already have the white pipe on my pau ferro fret boarded Dingwall D Roc. I got the black pipe for my maple fretboard/maple neck Combustion. A handy guy could probably do this at home, but it's worth the extra cost to me to have it done by a real pro, so mine is going to The Low End bass shop out here by Nashville.

This product comes with a small pipe of Luminlay that is enough to do up to 12 side dots for a 24 fret instrument with just a bit left over. I used a couple drill bits, one to make a pilot hole and then one that was the width of the Luminlay inlay, going about 3 to 4mm deep. Super glued the piece of luminlay into the neck using a small hammer to seat it in the hole. Clipped the protruding pipe with wire cutters as close to the neck as I could. I used a small fine toothed file and extra fine grit sandpaper to get the inlays flush with the neck. Extremely pleased with how these look and function. I use a small black light LED flashlight (that was also purchased from Amazon) to “charge†the dots and they glow nice and bright (as you can see in the pictures) for quite a long time.

Replaced the white 2.5mm side marker inlays on my Jim Root Telecaster with these 3mm Luminlay with black outlines. Hand drilled out the old fret markers then pre cut the Luminlay to 3mm depth and pre polished with 1200 grit wet sand. Used super thin CA glue with whip tip.

Meh, I wasn’t impressed with it. I don’t think this is worth the money they ask for, it’s ridiculous. I ended up buying some glow in the dark dust here on Amazon for $12 mixed it with epoxy and it glows exactly like this rod, and I mean exactly. The only difference here is the black cover around it, but I made it with piece of 14-12 gauge cable insulation, filled it with the epoxy mix and it turned out exactly like this one. Just offering an option here.
