Just for fun I hooked this thing up to a 9 volt battery and I could not pull it apart! So then I screwed the metal plate to a little block of wood to give me more leverage. I still couldn't pull it off. I could wiggle it down to a point where it would fall of the edge of the magnet part, but that isn't a realistic test since you wouldn't be able to do that when it is mounted properly. So that was with a little 9 volt battery. Later I tested current draw at 12 volts and at 24 volts. Both were right in line with the spec sheet. I plan to use this as a drawer lock or perhaps a small cabinet lock, with an RFID controller. It should be plenty to keep little ones out, but allow me quick access when needed. I think others may have pointed this out as well, but keep in mind the 80 pound rating in the title is at 12 volts. The unit can be powered up to 24 volts which raises that rating to 110 pounds. I couldn't pull it apart at 9 volts.....

This would be a 5 star review if it the magnet was not as pricey. I bought this for a science fair project for my 14 y/o daughter and it works as advertised. (Her project won second place in the Science Fair). This will work with a 6 volt battery (like the large ones that go in flashlights. Due to the lack of available power at the school science fair it HAD to be powered with the battery. The one 6v battery held up to 50 or so demonstrations. I did wire it up to a 12v landscape lighting transformer but it did not work. I am sure if I had monkeyed with the cable length I may have gotten it to work. If you have problems with the magnet NOT holding/locking it is probably because the magnet and the metal part it sticks to are not lined up properly. It is important not to screw down the metal plate too tight otherwise it is difficult to line the two parts up. VERY IMPORTANT....do not reverse polarity when wiring it up to your power supply if you do not want the magnet to arc and shoot out sparks and scare the bejesus out of you.... I know this from personal experience, but I had to see what would happen if I did reverse it. The magnet was also very strong an since we only had it hooked up to a 6v battery in can only imagine that 12v and 24v would be MUCH stronger. Although, once powered and lined up properly, not one person could break the bond.

Just what I was looking for! hard to find these days too, this is part of an electronic trap system... the new larger sized are just too darn big for our use. It's kinda like goldilocks... this one is just right!
