Update: We have now had this over two years. I can say it has held up well, we still love it and use it frequently!__I looked everywhere for a stainless steel food steamer to try to avoid having food touching plastic, hard to believe most of the steamers are plastic. I found this one and have been using it a few months now, it has performed well.I like the multiple levels to allow for cooking more food at one time. I usually only steam vegetables, so I cannot comment how this does with things like fish. I can say that vegetables turn out well in this and the trays are easy to clean. I had read concerns about the knob detaching from the lid, so I am always careful when I remove the lid. So far, so good (knocking on wood). I also like the auto "stay warm" feature in the event you need this to sit a minute while the rest of your meal finishes cooking. The only thing I'm not crazy about is having to wash the base, as this is also where the electrical plug goes in so you have to be really careful. And you do have to wash it, as food particles from the trays fall down below as things are cooking. I am just careful to avoid getting water in the little plug area. Other than that, I really like this steamer and am thankful to have one that is stainless steel.

I've had this steamer for about a month, and I love it. I like that it's not leeching plastic residues into my food. It's lightweight and easy to clean. Its a large capacity with 2 trays, and I rarely even need the second tray. I used it to steam hard boiled eggs, and they were perfect. The one con: It goes straight to warming mode after cooking, so if you leave it too long on that setting, you run the risk of overcooking. Overall, It's just really easy to use and clean, no fuss. We will see how long it lasts, I hope a long time!UPDATE: I have had this steamer now for 3 months. I never leave product reviews, but I still love this steamer so much that I thought it warranted an update here. I have no complaints. It's a workhorse, I've used it 2-3 times a day for 3 months. I don't put the trays in the dishwasher, so I don't know if that would affect it at all. They are easy to handwash quickly. After looking for a long time for a steamer that wasn't made out of plastic, this one is definitely a winner.

This is our 3rd steamer in 25+ years. Started with stove top steamers and then went through 2 Oster steamers which worked well ... had to repair one, but they lasted for years. This one is many steps above ... the stainless steamer baskets are the best ... the glass top too. NO PLASTIC touches the food.A bonus is this steamer makes perfect hard-boiled eggs ... set it for 22 minutes then quench the eggs in cold water. They peel easily and the yokes are bright yellow.

Right out of the box this was an impressive appliance, shiny retro-chic with seamless, smoothly molded stainless steel surfaces, clear controls, a brilliant display … everything that my last four plastic steamers were not! “Five Stars,†I felt sure. Then when I started using it, I began to notice issues - a strangely wobbly knob on the otherwise well made glass lid, an unsettling amount of steam sometimes escaping around the edges of the metal food trays, the absence of a water level indicator or a condensation tray, the lack of any way to add water during steaming - so my enthusiasm deflated a bit. When the lid knob actually fell off during my third use, I was less surprised than I wanted to be … though fortunately the old first-aid still works, stuffing the guide hole with lengths of wooden match or toothpick and driving the self-tapping screw (essentially wood screw) back in.Controls and displays turn out to be this steamer’s strongest attribute. They are intuitive, positive, and very easy to select. The timer display is bright and clear from almost any angle. The “delay timer†is surprisingly useful, and the “keep warm†feature works by default and performs well. The various labeled buttons bring up suggested steaming times for several food types (in the style of Instant Pot pressure cookers), and these are very easy to change with large +/- buttons.Cleanup is another strength: all surfaces wash easily, probably because steaming uses lower temperatures than most other cooking methods. The smooth design of the steaming trays eliminates sharp angles and crevices that could be troublesome to clean. The absence of a drip tray may turn out to be an advantage: I always find those hard to empty without spilling. With the Secura, all water that isn’t vented to the air returns to the fresh water tank, from which is safely and easily emptied (the tank is easily washed, though it develops heat stains). This design seems actually to use less water than others, so in practice no water level indicator may be needed. An excellent design feature is that all parts of the unit (base, trays, lid) have handles. These are well designed, large, stay-cool, easy to grasp. I don’t know why this should be a rarity, but it is. As to operating speed, heating begins immediately, steam is visible in the trays in about 1.5 minutes, and steam is venting at the lid (using both trays) within 5 minutes. It’s safe to assume four minutes for heat-up and the remaining time for full-on cooking (for instance, 22-24 minutes for sweet potato chunks that would boil in 18-20 minutes … once the water is actually boiling!).Overall this is a very nice unit because of its strengths and despite its weaknesses. I enjoy the taste and texture of steamed food, and I prefer electric steamers for their automatic timing. I’ve worn out four steamers across the years, never making peace with their hard-to-wash (or chemical leaching) plastic trays or, in many cases, their hard-to-see, hard-to-set, and failure-prone controls. This Secura steamer costs more than most of its competition, but also seems to address persistent problems - making it a reasonably good buy at the price. Before buying, I had some trouble finding the unit’s dimensions, so here they are (approximately): Height with lid: 13 ½ inches; Height with lid inverted for storage: 12 inches; Width including handles: 12 ¾ inches; Depth including control panel: 10 ½ inches; Food tray diameter: 9 ⅛ inches; Food tray depth: 3 ¼ inches. This steamer fits easily into the cabinet space I have available, actually needing slightly less room than the oval plastic unit that it replaces. Speaking of the trays, their gauge or thickness seems well chosen for lightness plus reasonable durability, remembering that they play no role in heat distribution (that’s done by steam).

Update: within 30 days it gave a persistent error message "E00" and wouldn't function any more. I must return it. How sad!!This is my first day experience. Steamed two frozen homemade tamales and two refrigerated tamales in bottom steamer. Then placed a bowl with rice, water and seasonings in the upper steamer (recipe according to the instructions). Set timer for 48 minutes on high temp. In 48 minutes I had fluffy rice and all tamales were fully warmed up to perfection with internal temp of 193 degrees F. The steamer went automatically into "keep warm" phase with a one hour countdown on control panel. Then it turned itself off. What more can you ask?!?! There was still an inch of water in the bottom boiler pan. It did not get to the point of dry boil. If it had, it has a dry boil sensor and should do auto shutoff. I will update in six months or sooner if I experience any failures.

The steamer we had for years died. I bought a new one off here, cheaper and plastic and when it arrived, I couldnt get past the strong smell of plastic and decided this was not something I wanted to cook food that would go in my body in so instead, I splurged on this stainless steel model, and am so glad I did!Food tastes better. Clean it after every use and its likely to last forever. Its lightweight and durable. The only cheap part on it is the lid, which broke in half on mine, but is still functional.I love it and would recommend. Eat clean! Cook smart.

I love the fact that the steamer parts are made of metal with glass cover! Healthy and safe material for cooking or warming food at high heat like steam, which contrary to any plastic steamers. It boils water quickly, and for me having a ready warm meal in 7-10 min is very reasonable. I use it to soften dry or cold bread pita/submarine in 2-3 min, that is awesome. Parts are light weight and easy to mount, and I feel safe with the auto-shutoff feature when water level is low.I do have few remarks/reservations though:1) it has excellent container size 9.25 inch diameter, allowing my full size 8.75 inch diameter plate to fit in with no problem, but I would have much preferred to have it in oval shape (rather than circular), with the longer axis being larger at 1.25x ratio. This would have been more universal to fit in elongated plates, and simpler in handling plates/cookware (please don't make it in a smaller diameter!)2) I dislike the fact that the screen has to stay illuminated reading OFF all the time when not in use. Either make it to auto turn off completely in few minutes after being not in use, or better, use that screen to display the time hour:minute; that is more useful.3) the feature of "keep the food warm for 1 hr" after end of cooking is nice, but it should not be "by default". That is a waste of energy and water, and it spoils my bread when I forget to monitor it! I would much prefer to have this feature as optional, where I choose to activate it manually by pressing the feature button, or I leave deactivated by default.4) one last remark is that I would have liked it better if the metal containers were a bit deeper, like having a height of 4 or 3.75 inches instead of 3.25 inches. It is still great, and it takes in a lot of my cookware, but some of my high edge pyrex or glass ware that I usually use for heating food do not fit in.I like this product a lot as is, I do recommend it as a much healthier option than a microwave (I don't have one for over 7-8 yrs), and I would have said I fully love it except for the 4 remarks listed above. There is a lot of room for improvement.
