Only reason I gave 4 stars is because it is a little flimsy if ground is hard but still does the job. I do like that it is adjustable in different lengths.. overall satisfied with my purchase

Quite, hollow for a grounding rod. Probably better to use for 'soft' soil sampling. Probing in harder soils don't seem feasible due to lack of sturdiness. Made from what seems to be aluminum. Blunt tip does not help penetrating soil.

A soil probe is a specialized item and you either need it or you don't. This is probably as good a choice as any if you need it. You'll want to think about what you are going to want to do with it to decide if this will do the job. It seems reasonably sturdy for what it is, a steel rod in 16 inch sections with a sharp tip on one end and a tee handle with plastic grips on the other. I used just the sharp tip screwed together with the handle to try probing for tree roots before tilling the soil. We have hard clay that feels like concrete when dry. It was not too hard to get the probe about a foot into the soil if there were no obstructions. I decided that I couldn't probe enough to map out tree roots and so we'll just have to till to about the dripline of the trees and then be careful. Might do some more probing at that point to see how much further we can go. I can't see using the full 4 section 64 inch length unless you are probing a haystack for something.

I wish the handle was a tad wider. Once you get into the longer add-on lengths it gets pretty flexible and harder to borrow down into the soil. But it held up, which is nice, I guess...
