This is one of the "secrets" of really professional shops. This is the perfectionist's indulgence and the finishing touch on new cables. Special Grease helps keep your system smooth if you clean and reapply after a few rides. Special Grease can make your home tune up feel that extra one percent better when everything else is also in perfect tune.This grease is not a cure-all. It will not overcome old, worn out cables and housing. It is ludicrously expensive; you'll get a small jar with about three fluid ounces of grease in the bottom. You'll use it sparingly and, in a home mechanic setting, you'll likely never have to buy more.Buy this if you want pro level maintenance at home. Buy this if you are an obsessive perfectionist and take bicycle maintenance seriously. Buy this if you want your shift quality to be as perfect as it can be.Don't buy this if you think it will make a huge difference. Don't buy this if you can't feel or don't care about the difference between low cost bulk cable and housing and a Dura-Ace or XTR cable and housing set. Don't buy this if you avoid products that have a price on the far right end of the scale of diminishing returns.I give it five stars because I am that obsessive perfectionist, and I appreciate a perfectly tuned ride. It does make a difference and I feel that I need to have this in my toolbox. Even if the improvement is small, if there is a product that makes an improvement in shift quality, don't you want to have that product? I bought this because I was doing a groupset upgrade from Shimano 5800-105 to 6800-Ultegra. The cables for Ultegra are different than 105 (new coating provides extra-smooth shifting). I had a question about specific cable housing (also coated internally) and called Shimano Tech Support. In Shimano's tech docs, there is mention of this cable grease. During our conversation, I asked the Shimano tech about using it. He recommended a light coating on the cables running inside the housing and at the housing ends/exits, not outside on bare cable. I'm running my cable housing and cables inside my handlebars. Using this grease on those sections of the cables, where there are bends and the cables run in and out, is especially helpful to smooth cable movement. If you have to pull the new 6800 cables, before you re-run, you may want to put another light coating on the cables. Do not put this grease on any part of the cable that attachs to a cable anchor.

Great for cable installation and maintenance. I love to use adequate components and products in my bike. It's a little expensive, but you only use a very small amount every time, so it virtually lasts forever. I think it's worth buying if you really like smooth and precise shifting, and knows the importance of proper cable's maintenance to achieve this goal.

Greasiness disappears a few minutes after application, leaving smooth, silky, almost frictionless feel. I bought for a new Shimano R8000 build, but now plan on applying the stuff to my 5 year old Campagnolo Record cables.

This product when left standing separates into a paste and an oil which requires mixing before applying to the shifter cables. I've have not noticed any significant improvement in gear shifting or cable function. There also doesn't appear to be any reduction in the amount of lever pressure required to change gears.

Use a very small amount to lube the SIS shimano shift cables, even though they are teflon lined and coated it helps the shifting. Used by the factory on new installs and in the cable housing. You get about 200 year supply so split it with a pal and store it in an old pill container.

This is a nice slick cable lube. I Worked a very small quantity into the cable where there will be contact points and around cable head.
