Product Description

Vintage Brass Antique Sextant with Box Educational Calibrated Navigational Instrument-Fully Working Sextant

hh

A sextant is an instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. The sextant was the primary instrument used for navigation at sea for hundreds of years. Without the invention and use of this instrument no one would have been able to travel and find the "New World" and therefore none would be here in the Americas. The nautical sextant is designed for navigational and astronomical purposes and allows horizontal and vertical angles to be measured. It is used in marine navigation for measuring vertical angles to stars, occasionally, also for measuring angles between terrestrial targets. The instrument is also fitted with filters, or dark-coloured glasses, which can be swung into position when needed, and are generally used for solar observations. The structure of the sextant is based on the theorem that a ray reflected by two mirrors is deflected by twice the angle enclosed by the mirrors. The sextant is a free hand instrument and so it's accuracy may be limited. It must be noted that the sextant measures angles, and not directions or bearings, and is a more accurate instrument than the compass, but not as accurate as the theodolite. The sextant however, in general, is lighter, more portable, and quicker to use than the theodolite. It can also be used from a moving platform, such as a ship or a small boat, where it is impossible to use a theodolite.

I am trying to learn to use this, this is a nice unit to work with, its not callibrated, but it still works as a learning tool.

It's not 21st century accurate, but very impressive and well built for its price. I would use it at sea.

This product is junk. My son is a maritime student and this is not usable for educational purposes. No factory information for calibration. Hence, it is not usable, you can not check the accuracy of the reading. It is going back today. VERY DISAPPOINTING CHRISTMAS GIFT.The seller had to know better. It was sent in a bubble wrap package, no box. I doubt it is new. Thanks so much, the seller, "medieval shop", misrepresented the product. They must either be dishonest or just plain ignorant. Shame on me as well, a high quality sextant costs upwards of $800.

This sextant is unusable in its current state. I plan to move the telescope down "one hole width" and add a plate to mount it on. The screws for adjusting the mirrors need a screwdriver. Most sextants have thumb screws. The "springs" that hold the horizon mirror and control adjustment are not very good. The telescope optics are "acceptable. I'll check the scale, when I get the initial problems fixed, then revise this review as appropriate, with photos of mods I've made. Bottom line, getting a $600 sextant for $100 is good, but will need $100 in parts and labor to make it "OK"

I purchased this to use as a decoration - I have a couple of much more expensive (Cassens-Plath, for example) sextants, that I have used while sailing..including a circumnavigation. This is not a modern model Tamaya. It does not have a dial light, for example: Nor does it have a fractional drum so accuracy is to the minute only, not minutes and seconds. It also has a large, weird placard on the handle that says 'SEXTANT'...Having said all that, for display it will be fine. I performed some calibration tests on it (Per Bowditch, paragraph 1412, and Perpendicularity, Side Error, and Collimation are all acceptable.
