This is a solid set to get started with sourdough, and includes all of the tools that you need to manage a small starter. The straight-sided glass jar makes it easy to pour out your discard, and the included thermometer and sliding band to mark both the age and level of the starter are great additions.The one concern that I have is with the threaded lid, which could be tightened, inhibiting the escape of carbon dioxide from an active yeast culture, leading to pressure buildup. However, since there is not a gasket within the lid, this may not be a serious risk. Too, you can leave the metal lid off entirely, and just use the included cloth cover, closing it with the drawstring.Note that this is a relatively small kit, and will really only enable you to make enough active starter for one loaf of bread at a time. For a single baker, or one with a small family, that's all you usually need, but if you have more ambitious sourdough baking plans, you might be happier with a larger container.

This is a nice set! I love the cheesecloth top to go with so you can vent easily. I also came with a screw top lid (looks like a wide mouth canning jar lid size). The spatula and banded date/time marker is very handy. It came packaged very well and the glass is very thick and sturdy which is very nice. It is a great size to grow my sourdough starter in and I will be purchasing another one because it is a very good quality product and the price is on point for what I will use it for. I hand wash it because it does come with a temperature strip you can add to the jar and I have to be careful washing it to not disturb the temperature gauge. Overall, it is easy to clean and works great for me!

This is a great jar for starters. I really like the wide mouth and straight sides. The long silicone scraper is very convenient to clean the mixture down into the jar.
