the two sections must butt together for it to lock securely. if more than 3/16 gap may pop loose if joint rocked some. has holes in bottom that can be used to fasten into mortise. easier to reconnect joint if turn extra 1/4 turn after disengages, this resets the cam mechanism that draws joint tight and locks in place.first saw these in two piece heat pump unit indoor section. break down unit so can move pieces into tight access and rejoin together. simple and secure latch. had need for concealed latch and used these. only needs 3/8' hole in side of mortise to insert allen wrench and turn latch.

I would trying to fix the cover to the access hole to my HVAC. Nothing really worked that didn't require my presents to let a service person into the crawl space. Someone suggested putting a full door over the hole - to big a project. Instead, I used this hidden lock kit and some hanging brackets to hole the panel tight to the wall. The service person is not instructed to just being along a HEX wrench and open the lock and lift the panel off the wall.
