This is a Christmas gift for my niece, she got all jelly when I gave my nephew my old LTD and begged me to get her a guitar, so when I found this sweet pink pick'n stick, it checked all the boxes for a beginner. As a guitarist who has been playing for decades, I can say this is a solid platform for any beginner to start out on and grow with. It's very light, the body is Bass Wood, which is an inexpensive quality tone wood, but you do need to becareful as it does nick easily if you are too rough with it or don't care for your instrument. THE FIRST RULE, when you buy a guitar, even a cheap one, get a quality case to keep it in, if you want to be a musician someday, you need a quality case, other musicians will respect you and take you more seriously if you keep your instrument in a case. So show your instrument some love, and get a case. Now onto the guitar. It comes well packaged and protected in a heavy cardboard box. After unwrapping it I began my inspection and checked the inspection card and went over the detailing and function, everything checks out okay, but the strings have to go, and since this is going to a pre-teen I got some Ernie Ball 11-48's, which are a pretty durable and easy to play string set for beginner youth. Highly recommend the Power Slinky's. So plan on replacing the strings with those or your favorite set. You never want to give a guitar as a gift with factory strings, anymore than you give someone a wallet as a gift with no money in it. Bad juju. The body is a Barbie like pink that just pop's! It's like it's saying "LET'S PLAY!". The controls and switch seem solid and easy to dial. There is plenty of area on this guitar for a young player to add their own 'Hello Kitty' stickers and bling if they want. So along with a set of strings, to make it an extra special gift, as set of stickers would do the trick. The Neck is a D shaped, maple neck. Kinda thick for a beginner, but seeing that its a starter platform you want a thick neck to extend the life and durability of the guitar. String bends and pull off's and overall play ability is comfortable and fun. The tuners are quality as well, after tuning it up with new strings it held tune surprisingly well, albeit I'm still in the process of stretching the strings, overall I'm genuinely impressed with this guitars play ability.Final thoughts... This is not just a beginner guitar, this is a solid platform you can grow with if you get a case and take care of it. I do recommend you get it checked out at a guitar shop for proper set up, but other than that, 5***** Stars!

If you are a beginner who knows nothing about guitar setup, you may run into a few issues with this guitar - all relatively easy to fix. Mine came decently well set up. It needed a 1/4 turn on the truss rod and I lowered the saddles a little to get better action, but it was already playable out of the box.I was surprised at how much punch the pickups had, usually that's the part Fender skimps on to keep the price down. It's on par with my far more expensive SG, which has the same pickup arrangement. No sharp frets on mine, though a couple are a little high, which I'll get to when I restring it. Intonation was solid, save for the standard issues with the first few frets on the G string (a pretty common thing on every guitar with a stock nut). Tune that string a few cents flat on purpose and it will sound ok.The only real drawback is the bridge, and there's not many options to do much about it. For a newbie, replacing strings will be frustrating, there's a learning curve to it.All in all, a solid piece of gear at this price point. You won't find anything much better for $200 for a new guitar. If you're looking for something more out of your $200, go used and find yourself a Godin. If you like a guitar with decent quality and a sharp look, this one is hard to beat.

I had to adjust the neck right off the bat but since I was moving between the Central Coast of CA (arid-ish) to New Orleans (very much the opposite, 90% humidity) I've learned how to adjust the truss. What I personally like about this guitar is it's very different from my other two stalwarts. I have a PRS 30th Anniversary SE with an ebony 24 fretboard (like it betta than my '83 Gibson LP custom, IMHO) and an '83 MIJ strat, I radically modded the electronics, and a rosewood fretboard. So this is very different. Neck has a nice shape, medium frets feel thin compared to the others but good.Oonce the neck is popped in, has nice low action. Not out of the box, so definitely get that adjusted. YouTube had some great DIY vids. Reading other reviews were helpful. I had a set of D'Adddario 10s so I replaced the strings, a must. I usually play 10s but you might take the info I got from a reviewer and use the next size up. I like the the 10s on it, but 11s would also do given the short scale length. Pickups: was fully prepared to replace the bridge with a SD JB hotrails, but after listening to the ceramic pickups thru the Boogie I like the heretofore mentioned contrast. Sure, noisy-ish on high gain but they sound very woody and open as low imp pickups tend to. Middle selector is very useful. At the moment I'm very satisfied with the sound and the really good playability. This one has no practical fret issues. I highly recommend it. Not 5 stars, because, well I have a PRS. Unfair..If this is your only guitar I'd recommend at least replacing the bridge pickup and while your in there maybe a push/pull coil tap for a humbucking p/u, I love the Duncan JB series, esp. the HotRails. Oh, after playing it for a bit had to slightly adjust the intonation on the low E. Again, Youtube to the rescue. But truss nad strings are a must. All said, darn good value, nice addition.
