This kit reminds me of models when I was young, except kids had to glue the pieces back then. This is a solar powered model, thus it doesn't require batteries, but it does require the model to be used outside on a sunny day, not a cloudy day, or inside under a 100 watt halogen light, not a fluorescent light. That being the case, this kit will have to wait for next summer, for the ground is covered with snow, and there's no halogen lighting in the house. This kit's instructions help the user to be organized in their build. It includes baggies and stickers to place on the baggies that designate which part will be in the baggy, then it recommends the user carefully clip each part and place them in designated baggies before starting the build. It also encourages the user not to lose any parts, which is what young people doing this on their own need to be reminded of. It's as though the instructor is on the written page, and it's great. As I examined the picture instructions, I see that an 8 yr. old will need some assistance at least in the beginning to understand what is being designated. Once the build is underway, they shouldn't need much supervision, though it depends on the 8 yr. old. The kit comes with clippers, shown in the picture posted. The grandson mentioned how he'd like to do a build of something that floats on water, and here it is! So far, I'm impressed with the looks of the kit, and the organized instructions that teach kids to do something in an organized way, rather than tossing the parts on the table to get lost. I'm sure the robot will operate when built, but just the building of it will be a good experience for a kid. Posting pictures of the front of the box, the contents, sample pages from the instruction manual, and the solar panel. This is a fine kit to give as a gift.

I really though this would be a cool project for my kid to do as he loves building things but after opening the WATUDOU 12-in-1 stem building kit I was positive that the age range was incorrect. This kit is incredibly complicated for an adult, let alone a child of 8. Just preparing the pieces and assembling the power unit took nearly two hours with the supplied snips. It was nice that they included bags and labels for when you’re organizing all the pieces. The quality of the plastic seems like pretty standard hobby strength. A few of the ends bent or broke when pushing pieces together. So far I have yet get a completely put together robot. I have assembled the power unit and tested it; big let down. I got zero movement from the motor. I’ll try leaving it in the sun longer and see what happens, but so far zero functionality. It will be an educational experience for my kid as well as myself since this isn’t something he can do on his own quite yet. I really had high hopes for this robot. The concept was great but the execution was a bust.I’m at a middle of the road review on the 12-in-1 stem robot.

I got this for my young son because he loves robots and plays with it constantly. My husband assisted with him cutting out all the pieces, just so none got damaged, but after that he immediately started reading and assembling the walker-bot himself. It took him maybe 30min the first time but the assembly was easy. He did probably five or six of the provided designs after that before he began using his imagination to create his own custom robots and its this flexibility I think he really enjoys the most. The included solar panel works OK, and after setting in direct sunlight for just a short period it does start operating. And he uses the optional battery to test his creations at night. He also loves showing them to his neighbor friend and they try and design robots together. I am really pleased with all the fun and play-ability he has gotten out of this one toy.
