I put this on the headstock of a guitar I built from a kit. It looks good. In my case, I just applied it after I was done putting on a poly finish. You may be able to spray over it but I didn't want to risk dissolving the glue. It's held up well.

I put this decal on the head stock of my banjo and other banjo players were surprised to find out it was a sticker. It looks beautiful.
