Care and Best Practices

Houseables Tatami Mat Natural Scent

Let the Natural Scent Settle

Our Tatami Mat is crafted from natural rush grass, which may carry a natural, grassy scent upon arrival. Placing the mat in a well-ventilated, sunny area for a day, or gently wiping the surface with a dry cloth, may help reduce the intensity of the initial scent. Remember that all natural-fiber mats will carry some scent, so those with sensitivities may want to consider a synthetic alternative

Keep it Dry

Too much contact with water can damage the tatami material. If you accidentally get it wet, quickly blot it with a dry cloth to prevent any staining. For those occasional spills, drying it in a fan-ventilated area afterward can help the mat return to its original look and feel. A quick response can make a big difference in preserving your mat's appearance and quality.

Houseables Tatami Mat

Limit Direct Sunlight

While some sunlight is helpful for maintaining the tatami fibers, constant exposure to direct sunlight can cause weathering on your mat. UV light and overheating can both negatively impact texture and longevity.

To keep your Tatami looking fresh and vibrant, store in a cool, well-ventilated location away from uncovered windows.

Houseables Tatami Mat

Fresh Air to Prevent Mold

Good airflow helps keep your Tatami Mat fresh and free from mold. Open windows periodically to let air circulate in the room, and try to sun-dry the mat every six months or so. Choose a sunny, breezy day, and your mat will thank you. These small efforts will help keep it feeling fresh and extend its life, so you can enjoy it for years to come.

I've never had tatami mats before so was very excited to get these. They are made of natural reed material, so they have a very strong grassy smell to them. I had to let them air outside for a week outside because it was too strong of a smell for me. I use these to put down on the floor to protect my Japanese style mattress. Since it is a breathable natural material, it helps the mattress breathe. It easily folds up or folds down and can be stored in the closest or off to the side which is a huge space saver. A dedicated bed takes up so much room. The mats are made very well and look very nice. Definitely a five star item.

I bought my tatami mat months ago and there was a bit of a bamboo-esque odor when I took it out of the box. As with most products, I didn't mind and I expected it to fade quickly over a few days. It's now a few months later and it smells as bad as the moment I unboxed it :( I can't even keep it in my kids' bedroom where I use it sometimes -- I store it in the garage. Definitely regret the purchase.

Great mat, works perfectly for me. I had compared this mat with the competition prior to my ordering it: the current price is about average, while the thickness is above average. I've often slept on the floor, because it seems to be the best for my back, but it can admittedly get uncomfortable when I'm not able to stay asleep. Since picking it up a couple years ago, I've been using the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress when choosing not to sleep on the floor, and it oftentimes seems almost too comfortable, making it hard to get out of bed, and lately I've been waking up with frequent backaches. In trying out this mat, I've revisited my periodic past usage of mats owned by Asian friends, and slept on it for the first time last night. The result: no backaches, with not only my ability to get up quickly to head out for my morning run, but decreased need to perform my routine back stretches prior to running. Definitely more comfortable than sleeping on the floor. While it might seem counterintuitive for many who think a mattress is needed for good sleep, I can attest from personal experience that this often isn't the case. The product description here is correct that this mat emits the "earthy fragrance of authentic rush grass", but this doesn't bother me whatsoever: I slept soundly without first airing it out. Some might be interested in knowing that I ordered the "Twin XL", with official dimensions of 79in (200.66cm) x 40in (101.6cm), keeping in mind that Twin XL is actually supposed to be 80in (203.2cm) x 38in (96.52cm), although this mat is actually a bit larger in terms of area: 3160in (20,387.056cm) versus 3040in (19,612.864cm). I think the "anti-slip beads on the backside" are a nice feature, but I'm using this mat on FLOR carpet tiles that I've installed rather than directly on the underlying wood flooring.

This Tatami mat is nice for stretches, yoga, sitting, and for sleeping on compared to our hardwood floors. We had been using yoga mats for most of those activities but this mat at least four times thicker and far more comfortable than the yoga mats. The mat is quite large and I have used it for sleeping on when our bed isn't comfortable for me and I need a bit of spinal correction. The Tatami mat appears to be well constructed and fairly durable. The smell of it is a bit much when the plastic wrapping is removed from it for the first time. I set it outside for about a week and most of it faded off of it. I'm sure the mat is treated at the factory to protect it from mold and pest before shipping. At this point, it just smells a lot like dried grass right now which is perfectly fine to me.It folds up easy to be put away when not in use. For us it also doubles as a cat gate when set up on its side, a bonus feature. The bottom side of the Tatami has little dots of gripping material to prevent slipping on hardwood floors. Overall, I really like the set up, build quality, and the feel of the whole thing so it gets 5 stars from me.

It is foldable but same comfort as the real tatami. It was much more manageable than the thick tatami. I got both and returned the real tatami. I have it in my yoga room. If you are allergic to grasses you will feel it. I have put an air purifier for now and it's doing good. It smells less and less with each day.
