I got this metal detector for family trips to the beach, as we often have fun sifting through sand to find agates and other treasures. I thought--and it turned out to be a correct hunch--that this would be much more portable than a standard, long-handled metal detector. This one fits in a pocket, or easily in a small backpack, so it's definitely not hard to bring along on a beach day trip. However, the convenience of its size does not quite make up for its functionality. To detect metal, this little device has to be right on top of it, and hovering for a few seconds, before it beeps, and the beeping is very quiet. This is not the device to use if you need to sweep large swaths of land for treasure, or check for deeply buried metal. This is a fun toy for kids to use, to sweep over small piles of sand or dirt, to look for metallic particles or very small bits of metal detritus. It can detect metal in someone's pocket, or find a lost screw in some carpet pile. None of this is very exciting activity, but for a small device that only takes two AAA batteries, it is, at least, interesting.

My husband received the Thames & Kosmos Spy Labs Pocket Metal Detector as a gift from me, and it has quickly grown to be an essential part of his metal detecting equipment. Both my husband and I must respectfully disagree, to an extent, with some of the other reviews I have read. This tiny device is excellent for what it is meant to do, which is to quickly locate metallic objects. My husband often removes a mound of earth after using his larger metal detector, and this little device makes it much easier to find the individual metal objects buried within it.Its small size and surprising power make it perfect for finding screws that seem to disappear the moment they are dropped. It has come in handy on several occasions, enabling us to quickly find those annoying screws that frequently vanish into the dirt or grass. It works good for the price, but my husband's opinion that the sensitivity should be adjusted further. Making sure that no metallic treasure is missed, the Pocket Metal Detector is a helpful addition to any metal detecting tool set. All things considered, it's a great purchase for everyone who enjoys metal detecting because it offers simplicity and variety in a small compact tool.

My son loves learning about science and different rocks and minerals so I thought that this would be a fun way to identify different metal materials. The metal detector is pretty small and very lightweight so it’s easy for kids to use. It did not include batteries so those need to be put in before the first use. After reading the instructions we were still a little unsure of how to adjust the settings correctly so it took a bit of trial and error to get it just right that it was able to detect metal objects without beeping for everything. This is best suited for using around the house as opposed to in the backyard or on the beach looking for buried treasures. It’s helpful for confirming if something is metal because it needs to be used within a close range. My son has been enjoying it, but the instructions could be a bit more clear on the different settings.

I was disappointed when I tried this out, I thought it would be a fun gadget for my kids but it just doesn't work well at all and you have to hold it like 1/2 inch close to something before it will beep. My kids still have fun testing if something is metal or not but it doesn't work very reliably and it's definitely not strong enough to "search" for anything unless it's a coin under a piece of paper.

The kids had some fun playing with this.I don't know how useful it would be in trying to locate anything metal. You have to be within a couple inches to get any reaction. And you basically have to find the one sweet spot to set the sensitivity, as opposed to it being legitimately adjustable sensitivity. Go too low, and you of course can't detect anything. And there's a sudden point about halfway along where it goes from being functional within a couple inches, to just always going off, regardless of how far away it is from anything metal. It may be detecting itself or something at that point.Again, kinda fun for kids to use as a metal identifier (Which, since my 3-year-old often likes to ask "is this made of metal", it's not actually quite as useless as you might think), but don't expect them to be homing in on lost coins in the dirt or whatever with it.

The Thames & Kosmos Spy Labs Inc: Pocket Metal Detector is an okay little gadget, but it has its limitations. First off, the batteries aren’t included, so be sure to have some on hand. It was able to detect things like screws and nails in the wall, which was fun at first, but it’s too small to be effective for finding items outside.Adjusting the sensitivity higher just made it beep constantly, and the instructions don’t really explain what the different settings do, which was a bit frustrating. It provided some brief entertainment, but I got bored with it pretty quickly. It’s a decent toy for indoor use, but there are better kits from Thames & Kosmos if you’re looking for something more engaging or versatile.

Like other spy labs toys, my nephew loved this as well. He's learning about different kinds of metals and which ones are conductive/valuable. He was running all over the house putting this device against things to try and figure out what kind of things he could find with a larger one. My only complaint is that it has to be pretty close to detect anything. Like within an inch.
