As a tech, i use this for steel wheels. I compared the measurement to my standard gauge tool. It's fairly accurate. If you read anything under 4mm, I would definitely take the tire off to get a better look.

So when I got this tool, I thought it didn't measure right. I went to work the next day and used it on a customers vehicle. That's when I realized I was not using it right. It measures from the outside of the pad shim to the rotor not from the inside edge. It works well for a quick measurement without taking the wheel off.

The part that hold on to the pad broke off within the fist week. It was a awsome tool till that happened

Got tired of the “surprise brake-job†at state inspection time. Handy little tool to let you know where you’re at.

I'm not sure I like this. I tried it a few times and double checked against a standard brake gauge and it is close but seemed to read slightly bigger. I think the problem is that this tool reads from the back of the backing plate to the rotor face. If you're measuring the pad thickness, it should be from the inside of the backing plate to the rotor face. Different pads have different plates. My measurements were about 1-2 mm off. That's too much for a professional setting.
