The Masu Box Way of Enjoying Sake

1-1

A Symbol of Generosity

Step up your sake experience and serve it in the most the authentic way possible which is guaranteed to impress your friends and family, delivering unforgettable inspiration for years to come. Start by placing the glass sake cup inside this wooden box which is called a "masu" in Japanese. Fill their glass with sake until it gracefully overflows into the wooden masu box. As the sake pours in, your guest will be treated with a hint of the refreshingly natural scent of hinoki cypress. The intentional overflowing of sake into the masu box is a popular and traditional way of serving that symbolizes generosity.

1-2

Drink Responsibly in Style

While just the image of the masu box and glass full of sake will look stunningly amazing on the dining or bar table, well deserving of a photo, it might seem like a rather daunting task to actually consume the sake without making any mess. However, there is a clever way to avoid any problems in this situation that is well known in Japan by first simply drinking a little bit of sake from the top of the cup without lifting it or the masu box.

1-3

Lift, Wipe & Enjoy

After drinking some of the sake from the top of the glass, it can now be carefully lifted up. Next, the bottom of the glass should be wiped with a cloth so that sake doesn't drip on the lap or table surface. The masu box will help catch any drips when the glass is first lifted directly upward before another delightful taste of sake is enjoyed from the glass in the hand.

1-4

Your Masu, Your Moment

The rest of the sake can be drank from the glass and directly from the masu by drinking from the corner in informal settings. It is also commonly poured from the masu into the glass after the glass is empty. Everyone has their own favorite way of drinking from a masu and discovering it is indeed the fun part of owning your very own. So, at this point, as long as spillage is avoided, one doesn't need to worry too much about any rules and can just have a relaxing time drinking Japanese sake in style.

The Many Uses of a Masu Box

2-1

Refreshing Hinoki

Products made from Japanese hinoki cypress wood certainly look nice and this material is indeed very well known for its refreshing fragrance, beautiful grain and durable strength. This makes a masu box perfect for supplementing the experience of drinking alcohol from faraway places on different sensory levels. These hinoki wood masu boxes will have the same advantages when used as containers for a meal by enhancing the flavors, aroma and general experience of a small dish or appetizer.

2-2

Excellent Display Item

Having a hinoki masu box on display, ready to be used at any time, is undoubtedly a great conversation piece and just the presence of it will add some welcome culture and sophistication to your dining area, kitchen or living room. Like many amazing things in Japan, at first glance it looks simple, yet after a closer look you find yourself marveling at the remarkably clever construction, which in this case doesn't require the use of nails. Of course, this method is one of the many respected traditional techniques found all over Japan, even today, with an impressively long and fascinating history.

2-3

Gift an Experience

The quality and novelty of this item easily makes it a wonderful gift for especially those friends or family members interested in Japan and exotic ways of drinking alcohol. Fans of Japanese culture, design and of course sake will quickly learn or already know it is an essential item to have around the house as the masu is a great example and symbol of tradition that is still very practiced in modern Japan.

not a sake drinker, but I drink all kinds of other things. I also use this to serve food in. It may stain it (think chocolate), but that's life. Beautiful workmanship, terrific tactile feel. I feel like the best version of myself using these masu cups (that is the right word, right?)
