Do these things work? You bet they do. I did a quick test using a 12V DC switching power supply, and here are the results. One picture without the coil shows 568mV PP ,the other picture that shows 228mv PP is with the coil.

Measured the inductance of the coil. Saturation close to 3A, roughly reached at 10uS on a 10V coil voltage.
