Added these in between the front of my Z stepper motors and the lead screw couplers to eliminate any axial motion in the motors. Work great. Most stepper motors have wave washers on the armature shaft to eliminate axial play, but if your Z axis is heavy, they can move. This will fix it.

I have an old Champion 101 post drill and what commonly breaks on them after about a hundred years is the thrust bearing between the acme screw and the spindle. Pretty hard to fix or replace, unless you find a 3$ thrust bearing the exact right width. Even if this wears out after a few years it costs less than a drill bit.
