Product Description

3D Printer CNC Shield Expansion Board

Package Includes:

  • 1 x V3 Extension Board
  • 4 x Drivers
  • 4 x Heat Sinks

CNC Expansion Board:

  • Version: V3.0
  • Size: 68 x 53 x 18mm / 2.67 x 2.08 x 0.7"
  • Voltage: DC 12V to 36V (only DRV8825 driver can handle up to 36V, so please consider voltage for power supply)
  • The V3.0 expansion board can be used as a drive expansion board for engraving machines, 3D printers, etc. There are a total of 4 slots for stepper motor drive modules, which can drive 4 stepper motors, and each stepper motor only needs 2 IO ports, that is to say, 6 IO ports can manage 3 steppers The motor is more convenient to use.
  • Experimental phenomenon: The stepper motor reverses one circle, pauses for 1 second, and then rotates forward one circle, and so on.
  • Note that when connecting the A4988 module, do not connect it backwards. The wiring of the stepper motor is: 2A, 2B are a group (red, green); 1A, 1B are a group (blue, yellow). If you want to change the direction, you can change the position of one group, such as swapping 2A and 2B.

4pcs A4988 Driver:

A4988 Stepper Motor Driver

  • Size: 20 x 15mm / 0.78 x 0.59"
  • Thermal Shutdown Circuit: Yes
  • Cross Current Protection: Yes
  • Ground Fault Protection: Yes
  • Short Circuit Protection: Yes
  • Compatible Logic Voltage: 3.3V and 5V
  • Five Step Modes: Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16
  • Mix with slow current attenuation model.
  • Internal UVLO and low RDS (on) output.
  • Automatic current attenuation mode Detection/Select.
  • Phase-in rectifier, low power consumption.
  • Warning: Connecting or disconnecting stepping motor while driver is powered on might damage driver.
  • In terms of power supply, we connect the +5V power supply terminal between the logic voltage of the device VDD and GND, and we need to connect 8-15V (DC) between the motor power supply VMOT and GND.
  • Three mode selection terminals: MS1, MS2, MS3, full step mode (200 steps or one step for one revolution), if higher accuracy is required, you can select other modes, such as if you choose 1 /4 step mode, then the motor needs to send 800 microsteps to complete one revolution.
Stepper Motor Driver Module with Heat Sink

4pcs Heat Sinks:

  • Size: 8 x 8mm / 0.31 x 0.31"
  • Color: White

Features:

  • Use removable A4988 or DRV8825 compatible stepping driver.
  • The extension board can be used for engraving machine or 3D printer driver.
  • Compatible with GRBL 0.8. Open-source firmware, converting G code command into stepping signal.
  • PWM spindle and direction pin, 4 shaft support (X, Y, Z, A - you can copy X, Y, Z or use pin D12 and D13 customize firmware perform complete shaft 4).
  • This is a set of disassembled part, and you need basic soldering skills to solder them together.

First time using one of these and I bought this for a little DIY CNC and it works for that. I spent over a day trying to get my Z endstop working till reading another review on here and looked into the board. He is absolutely right this is not a V3 board but a V2 board and has the same pin problem the V2 boards had where the spindle and Z endstop are flip flopped. Once I saw that and corrected the wiring positions everything worked fine. I considered returning but it's working.

One of the a4988 was dead on arrival. Packaging was inconsistent between drivers

It's insane that there is no testing going on before they ship the drivers. Imagine how easy it'd be just to put the drivers in a shield and test it with a multimeter. It'd literally take less than a minute. Maybe 1 dead driver is understandable but 3 out of 4? Completely unacceptable. Definitely returning.

Item says version 3 on it and follows all the pretty photos and specs you find online. Problem is Ver 3 board works with the newest GRBL without using Spindle Pins As Z-Axis Limit Switches cause of Chip Layout design. so this is clearly a Version 2 with a 3 printed where old 2 was! Tracks on the board follow a version 2 layout as wel! Worked perfectly fine! The whole point of making a ver 3 board was to fix the GRBL's need for the Z-axis pins that had more functions then the spindle pins were capable of using! Either way the product worked just fine for my needs but be awre if you wondering WTF is wrong with your Z axis not homing or limit switchs working or spindle turns on full balls to the walls when off! There you have it is you use GRBL 1.1 IF YOU USE GRBL .9 or earlier it will be correctly functinal as is! Spindle ON/off is Z- / Spindle speed control is z+ and Z- /Z+ same deal!

One of the capacitors located under the stepper driver was installed backwards so it exploded when I applied power and launched one of the drivers into the ceiling.Since I was using this for a laser engraver I only needed 2 out of 4 stepper so I swapped the capacitor from an unused spot and I ended up using better drivers that I had spare anyways. Other than that it worked after fixing it.Check the capacitor polarity before powering it up!

All items came in damaged, although I suspect it's an Amazon issue that damaged it while delivering but also in part to manufacturer for not using any packaging aside from a ziplock bag to minimize potential damage during delivery.

My package only contained 3 stepper motor drivers… this is fine for my project, so I won’t be returning. I assume it was an error during packaging, but something to watch for.
