Why choose anything besides these for your brush work? I bought these, and Peter Erskine asked me to come play a gig for him, because he liked my brush work better than his. I'm not kidding, these brushes made me a MILLION dollars. By far the best drum stick ever created, I would recommend that you buy 1 set, because that's all you'll need. I've had my pair for 87 years now, and the look and work brand new. I mean WOW. waow.

I've used many brushes because I've been playing jazz since 1978. So I've tried many some which really are awful. The is the only one for me. I have a pair of Vic's while handle brushes too and don't like them. These are perfect and can be played pretty loud if you lay into the drum, or a whisper. Runs the entire spectrum of the brush palette. They're not paying me to say this.

I must say that I was initially disappointed with these brushes because they are extra light and have a really wide fan-out. They are very reminiscent of my first set of brushes way back in the early 60's. I found them difficult to get any kind of decent sound with them playing matched grip, so I decided to try them with traditional grip: BIG difference! They are actually perfect for old school brush work! So, it all depends on what you're looking for. By the way, they do have a couple of notches that allow you go with a more narrow fan-out, but I found that such a setting changes the balance too much to be practical. If you want a narrow fan-out with stiffer wires, buy something else. But if you're playing 50's-60's style jazz a la Roach, Philly, or Motian, these may well be as good as you'll find these days.

The Vic Firth brand is top-shelf, and that is what I wanted in a set of brushes. No disappointment at in the quality and price of this product.

The Vic Firth company always have great products. It is more expensive, but for professionals like me, it is worth every penny. I only used Vic Firth drum sticks, for many years. They have the bests drum sticks I ever played with...So nice products and perfect quality for pros like me.
