Your cart is empty.The Mariner’s Stormglass displays Victorian technology in contemporary housing. The premise of the stormglass is that changing weather affects the solubility of the mixture of chemicals in the sealed glass tube. Thought to have been invented by an alchemist for Italian sailors, stormglass instruments have been in use since the 1750s. Admiral Fitzroy, the famous sailor and meteorologist, mounted an instrument similar to the Mariner’s stormglass on the mast of HMS Beagle as a storm warning instrument during his historic voyage with Darwin in the 1830s. Some believe that the changes in crystal structures have to do with the electromagnetic changes caused by weather and sun storms.

Now I'm not saying anything can predict the weather. However it does change noticeably as conditions change. Well made and looks that way. Nice conversation piece.

Works just as expected. Looks good too. Obviously it doesn’t work inside the house but I keep it out in my garage and check it on the way out the house. Yes I know I can use a weather app on my phone but it’s cool to have this around to look at.Update: This has predicted the winter snow better than my local weather forecasters!

I really liked the look and feel of this: it has a nice heft for it's size and is nicely polished. Don't care it it was made in Taiwan or wherever, the finish is classic Weems & Plath. I have 3 chart weights by them and got this to complement them. The clock weight has been running for over 20 years so I expected W&P stuff to just work. I know this is essentially a novelty piece but for almost a c-note, I'd think it would at least *look* like it works. I'm in Seattle area and, in the time I had it, it hailed, stormed, got sunnny, snowed in the region and even had a good windstorm. This looked almost exactly the same throughout. I'm guessing I just got a bad one cuz again, W&P stuff is highly rated here. I'll try a local marine shop for my next one so I can see it first.

This is more of a nice decor piece than a weather forecaster, but we love looking at it and commenting on its predictions.

Excellent build quality allows you to more effectively imagine what it was like for seafaring captains back in the day. Much nicer than the many cheaper alternatives. Haven't had any storms yet, so I can't fully judge its accuracy. Have had mild showers that it did predict via a transition from its original state to one with wide, fern-like crystals. So far, it's been a nice (though somewhat expensive) purchase.

Scoff if you will, but this centuries-old prognosticator is MORE ACCURATE than all of the high-tech national forecasting. I view my stormgalss this Thursday morning and it predicts overcast and storms in the next days. The official, national service is forecasting pleasant and mostly sunny through the weekend. Just now, on the noon news / weather report, the official forecast is changed to stormy weather for the weekend. Really!!?? They must have consulted their Mariner's Stormglass!!! Funny! Very funny! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Pass the grog mate! We be in for a bit of weather tonight! ARRGH!

I am a bit frustrated that this storm glass cost so much, but right on the box it says made in Taiwan, although this is an American Company. I would not have paid so much had I known. It looks nice, just think the price is high for something not made in America.
