I purchased this to outfit a guitar tech shoproom; It's a fantastic item for working on small parts like guitar saddles and nuts, truing up leveling blocks, etc. I also love it for sharpening knives, chisels, plane blades, etc. The plate is as true as you could want it for purposes such as these. While you could probably get it set up in your shop yourself if you're a strong dude or dudette (It's about the size/weight of a large bag of concrete mix), I'd recommend having a buddy give you a hand so that you don't smash your fingers setting it down upon a table. The price really is amazing for the quality, and it came sturdily packaged in a wooden crate/frame. It comes with a "certification" report that looks like it came from the manufacturer. Due to the low price, I'm suspicious of the manufacturer's claim that it's true to .00005. It's ultra-flat, no doubt, and I have no explicit reason to doubt them but .00005 is pretty darn precise and most of the plates similar to this size and that advertised precision I've seen are 2-3 times the price of this one. Occam's razor would lead me to assume it's more likely that this company is over-puffing their tolerances than it is that all the other companies are over-ratcheting their price. However, I checked it against my Starrett straight-edge and was supremely satisfied with the precision I observed. Really, I just want a tolerance of .001, and anything beyond that is gravy. That said, this block is pure, ultra-flat, satisfying gravy. I'd say that if you need a surface plate but don't want to dent your wallet too badly, this baby is right up your alley.

I have trouble believing the tolerance listed for this surface plate given its price, but I actually bought it to serve as a fancy mousepad. It actually works surprisingly well as a mousing surface, assuming you can get over the 2" tall profile of the thing. I do all my computing stuff from a couch that has a center console with a recessed cup-holder area in which this slab of granite fits perfectly, so I don't have any trouble with its height. The working surface of the plate has a nice matte finish and is very smooth and even. Without any of the fancy coatings many of the gamer-grade mousepads have, this surface plate manages to provide the smoothest, most even feeling mousing experience I've had to date. The friction is a little higher than purpose-built mousepads, but something about the regularity of its surface makes up for that.I'm sure this granite surface plate would work well for its intended purpose, as well. I do recommend it for its quality of build, even if you're not weird like me.EDIT: Someone asked about the overall dimensions of this, but cleverly rescinded their remark upon noticing them laid out in the description. The given dimensions are slightly wrong, however, so the real dimensions as measured with a tape measure are as follows:9" x 11-13/16" x 2"(accurate to +0.00", -0.06")

This granite block is excellent not only for sharpening tools (the sheerness and smoothness of the surface is excellent) but for shock absorption when doing leathercraft related hammering. The edges of my block are also nice and smooth which makes it easy to handle and move around the workshop and minimizes the chances it may scratch my crafts or tools. The weight is also incredibly helpful in stabilizing my bench. Overall, I absolutely recommend this thick block not only for your sharpening needs but for your leathercraft needs as well. Thank you for offering the best value for money granite block out there, Woodcraft!

This is going to be the most boring review. As how much can one write about a flat slab of stone? Well it’s flat, very flat, very heavy, I bet the delivery person thought that this small package can’t be that heavy, well it was. If it was a heavier element like Osmium which is heavier by 2x as lead, it would be undeliverable unless it came on a pallet. Very happy, it’s not a machinist quality when you’re chasing microns in precision but for a woodworker to have a reference surface this is more than one will ever need, and fraction of a cost of a machinist block.
