Circa April 2023, two top grade certified Ford mechanics replaced my 4.2 V 6. Within weeks, idle became poor & erratic. Two different scan tools revealed Mass Flow Sensor was the culprit. They replaced it, but problem remained. After more scanning, nothing was revealed as a problem, so I seldom drove it. Someone suggested I replaced crankshaft sensor, but problem remained. Out of frustration, I followed the advice of those who say, on Ford 150s, it’s best to replace sensors which have over 100,000 miles B4 they force you too. As Amazon have high quality, inexpensive sensors, I replaced these sensors in the following order, 1.) Idle speed control motor> no improvement>2.) Vacuum Solenoid Purge Valve Hub> no improvement.3.) Dorman 911-231 Vapor Canister Purge Valve> this had a huge impact for it exposed some weak vacuum lines. However, once new vacuum lines were installed, it still ran poorly or erratically.4.) Installed another new Mass Flow sensor. Minor improvement.5.) The problem was Air Charge Temperature Sensor. It is the most rewarding & best $20 spent on this F 150. Engine runs superb & gas mileage increased from 15.4 to circa 18.1. This is highway driving at 70 mph.Recommendation, if your F 150 has idling problems or poor MPG, but you cannot pin-point what’s causing it & your Air Charge Temperature Sensor has greater than 100,000 miles of use, rather than pay an automotive shop $65 for a diagnostic, for less than $20, it’s worth replacing Air Temperature Sensor. Less than 2 minutes for installation.

This replaced the IAT on a 2000 F350 7.3 diesel. The factory air intake was replaced with a K&N cold air intake (CAI) a long time ago. The IAT is now located in the heat shield for the CAI. This new IAT is slightly different in design as the old one was inserted through the heat shield and held in place with a ½ twist engaging the two tabs on the base of the IAT. This design does not have those tabs seemingly replaced by the protruding ring in the center of the shaft. It was a simple matter of making the hole in the heat shield just a little bigger and “shoe goo†now holds the IAT in place. It worked; trouble code gone.
