I installed this heater on a Cummins 230Hp QSB5.9Liter Diesel engine on a boat. It was installed on the side of the oil pan after sanding off the paint and attaching to bare metal. I caution anyone who may think to install this on a painted surface that it is likely to fail early and slowly detach from the paint. The reason is that I measured this unit with a PIR gun and it was running at 450F - yes high oven temperature! So it is likely that if paint is left under the unit it may eventually bubble off and cause the heater to over heat and fail. So don't shortcut the installation steps. On a large engine like mine the top surface came up to about 71F (it was 55F outside the vessel) after running for ~16 hours so it takes a very long time for the entire engine to get really warm. But the oil pan and sump was running well over 100F so the oil will get warmed nicely and help in starting the engine with reduced viscosity - that reduces wear on the engine in cold weather.Once cold weather sets in I plan to just leave this heater turned on at all times as it draws just a bit over 2Amps. Cost of electricity at the dock when running it full time will be very modest. It will prevent water freezing in the marine engine and allow quick starts in late fall and early spring when daytime temps don't exceed 50F.I like this system vs a coolant heater because it does not require draining and catching coolant and then replacing the coolant after installation. Sanding paint is far easier!! Follow directions and it takes only 30-45 minutes to get it installed with good access to allow sanding.

I bought it and installed it before the weather got to cold. After it was installed I plugged it in. The silcone pad bubbled in a couple of spots. I have had it for three months. After two weeks of using it every morning. It burned a hole in itself. Waste of money.
