How does ER32 Spin Index Work

Example of how CanCNC ER32 Spin Jig Rotates a Workpiece

The back side of the index disk has degree markings. They are labeled 0 through 35. They help track where you are on the circle. Each increment represents 10 degrees. The holes and the markings (0-9) behind the index disk allow indexing down to degrees. E.g.: You want to rotate 45 degrees. Just rotate the index disk by 4 increments. Put the index pin in hole #5. When the pin drops in totally, we are 45 degrees away from the original cut.

I could not get the shaft to rotate after I took the unit out of the box. I suspected a manufacturing defect becaseu it basically imovable, I was able to ger the "nuts" off each end to reveal the shaft hole inerface. on each end. Some light taps with a soft hammer and sone "Blaster" peretrating oil enabled small movements. With alittle work I was able to get the unit operational. I don't expect perfection from these inexpensve tools, but a little warning wouod have set my wexpectations correctly. Its a fery sumple mechanism and I do not eanticipate problems.

Needed a quality index in head and found it in this tool. Bought a full set of precision colletts to go with it. Quite pleased.

thing was thrown in a box that may may not be original to it. I'm assuming it was returned but can't verify that. it rattling around loose in the box with hardened included hardware and tools have critical surfaces very inappropriately beat up. looks like it might've been OK before it was poorly packaged and handled. I don't know that it was the manufacture or not. I don't even know who to ask questions about this because there's no support links anywhere so I think I'm just gonna return it to play it safe. Thinking about it more there's nowhere the manufacture package it like this

Product Reviewed: CanCNC Tooling Solutions 0225-0206 ER32 Precision Indexing and Grinding Spin Index for $130 minus 5% couponTL;DR; Similar to other import spin indexes; fast basic dividing; ER32 Collet; Check assembly before useI have a basic machine shop to support repairs and small projects.I have a similar index that is 5C but was recently introducing ER collets into the shop. This is very similar to my 5C indexer. The only functional use I have made of it is to resize some jewellery by shrinking/upsetting using an ER collet sized for the piece in question. I have not measured TIR but overall fit and finish is OK on the critical parts and the locking mechanism though rudimentary seems quite solid. The index plate on mine was not secured to the spindle so spun independently. I was surprised to see that the plate is secured to the spindle by a single nut requiring a pin spanner to tighten it. I took a moment to have a look at my original 5C index and it is the same. I would be cautious not to count on the index pin/plate to lock the workpiece as unexpected load could cause it to slip. A bit of a lesson for me but not a specific critique of this tool.I do wish that a pin wrench/spanner had been included with this tool so the index plat nut could be tightened more easily and the lack of positive lock between the index plate and spindle make me want to knock off a point. Still this is a nice little spin index and worthy of consideration. 4.5 starsHow I review:Reviews start with 5 stars and I subtract points.- 0 for value but I try to provide guidance-0.5 to -3 for product not matching description e.g. stainless steel is actually plated steel-0.5 to -3 for product missing badly on executionI select products carefully so low (1-3 scores) are rare but detailed comments and critiques almost always are in the review. Most of my reviews come out 4-5 range. If possible I dismantle or destroy items to examine inner workings.

The indexer came triple boxed and arrive with chipped paint along the sharp edges. As with any import tool, the first thing you have to do is clean it. I used denatured alcohol and Brake-Kleen to remove the horrible smelling grease/cosmoline. The paint is very soft and started coming off. My other complaint is the cheap aluminum set screw/knob. I’ll make a new one out of brass.Checked the runout in the bore and measured .00025. Not too bad and much better than I expected. This appears to be the same indexer casting that other sellers/manufacturers are using. The machining and surface finish is pretty nice. The index plate and degree engravings are clear and very easy to read. The locking pin is snug with no play.Overall, happy with the purchase.

Created a mount to use this with my wood lathe to make precise decorative cuts on the body and mouth of turned wooden vessels. Of course tolerances are overkill for wood, but appear to be fine for any metal work I might do. Not having used one before, I definitely could have used a better manual or tutorial for use—but realize that won’t be an issue for experienced users.

For some reason, my tool was stuck solid. I mean, I couldn't move anything. The pin was frozen in place. Everything was absolutely stuck. I had to hose it down in PB blaster several times over the course of several days to get it unstuck. I don't know if water got in there during shipment or what, but it definitely wasn't loose when it first came in.Once it's actually moving, it works fine. It's accurate. The paint isn't fantastic, but I don't really care about that. Most of the paint on most of the stuff I actually use gets damaged anyway. I already have dozens of ER32 collets laying around, and they worked fine in this. I managed to make a few sprockets in my mill with this. I definitely prefer making them over buying them now.So, it works, when it decides to start moving.
