The first spring i tried to compress was successful in that the machine did compress the spring. The uncompressing however was not so great. There is a label on the machine that reads to uncompress, turn the handles 1/4 of a turn in the compress direction, which will release the latching mechanism and allow the spring to uncompress. I was not successful. Finally, I had to remove the lactching mechanism by removing its spring and latch via a pipe plug below the handwheel.

I'm particularly comfortable with this tool, the material is sturdy enough to remove the spring quickly, and the tool is very stable and doesn't tip over, which helps a lot!
