PRO: Read all the reviews, mentally formed opinion ahead of receipt of unit that it probably is worth about 2 stars, 3 at most. However!! I received unit (on time, as promised!), didn't bother reading instructions (my nature!), unit worked fine right out of the box. The accessories are obvious, easy to connect, even the slivers of reflective tape! CON: only one: I'm right handed and when I hold the tach in reading position, my wrist wants to blind-side the readout. it's difficult to view the readout while keeping the button depressed, simultaneously aiming the tach in operating attitude, Suggest the designer practice a bit of human engineering, maybe relocate the 3-way placement of the business end, readout, and start buttons! Nevertheless, 5 stars, nice instrument!

Gets it done just right, if you’re looking for simple readings, without major regards for precision, this is the best you can get for the price. Just don’t leave the batteries in it between uses, they’ll drain and spill, ruining it.

All functions work as expected, but the manual will take some figuring out. The unit shuts off when button is not pressed and saves readings automatically, reviewing them is possible but a bit awkward with just one button. It is easy to use for when you need the measurement right away and not saved in memory. In contact mode it does not measure distance (m) only speed (m/min) although the manual claims it. The backlight on the unit flickers a bit, almost as if some circuit component is about to give out, but it has been operating for a while now despite the flicker. If you need to use this for your job / regularly, a higher quality device would be better.

I bought this to check my wood lathe speeds. I checked it against my other lathe that has a digital readout and a computerized feedback system that constantly checks and displays the selected speed and the actual speed. This little cheap-o tach was right on at every speed I checked.I would recommend this tach to anyone that wants to check the RPMs on anything that's rotating. You just put a small piece of reflective tape (included) on the rotating piece (while it's stopped, of course) and shoot the laser at it.The only negative is the switch could get inadvertently bumped on. A rocker or sliding switch would be better.

Unit arrived and was obviously a previous return. Box was open. 2 of 4 batteries were missing. Bag of parts was obviously repacked.In the laser photo mode there was no reading. No red dot projected out of the device. Looking into the lens it was obvious that the laser diode was bent away from the lens. Very poor assembly. I opened the unit up and bent the diode into the correct position. This had been noted in other reviews of this product.After reassembling the photo tach worked. Strong red beam. I tested it on an induction motor using reflective tape and it was accurate. Tested on a RC airplane with a black propeller and no reflector and it measured it accurately, matched the telemetry reading from the RC controller. That was impressive.Using the contact wheel on end of an induction motor was a challenge. Unless precisely centered on the shaft It kept flying off the tachometer shaft. I eventually was able to get a good accurate reading.

This device does not measure surface distance. It will measure rpm, m/min, but not meters or feet as distance traveled.If you're so inclined you can mark a moving surface and time in seconds the interval of the mark's appearance. Apply the wheel and measure the surface speed, then do the math. But the tool will not count up as the wheel is applied to the moving belt.It's cheap, and it works. But it doesn't do the very thing I bought it for in the first place. It may in fact do what it says it can, but the instructions for distance travelled and surface speed are word for word identical.So, there's that.

I used the unit to recalibrate the Tachometer and Speedometer on my car. The non-contact tachometer worked great. I did have some trouble finding a suitable spot to attach the reflective tape required to do a measurement but did finally find a suitable spot for it. I used the contact linear speed measurement to calibrate my speedometer ... just held the linear speed measurement attachment to my raised car tire and did the measurement fairly easily. The linear measurement wheel could use a more secure attachment mechanism. The contact attachment flew off one time during the calibration procedure. Overall a great little device and certainly good value for the cost.
