The black marks are all etched in and can be easily rubbed off with any wear and tear. Also the middle pivot point is not perfectly centered and has uneven edges.

I was looking for such a protractor for a while, but not the cheesy chalkboard ones with no accuracy at all.Often enough I need to make a large drawing that I need to be as consistently accurate as my smaller drawings. I have larger protractors but this smaller one serves me better for tasks like the 3x 120 degree markings for a telescope spider assembly which must be exact.The full 360 degree circle means not having to re-orient the protractor.It came inside the padded Amazon bag in a smaller, thickly padded bag with a clear plastic envelope holding the beautiful protractor. Tools like this really are worth protecting to keep them in perfect condition!
