Toggle bolts come with spring-action wings and are intended for anchoring into hollow walls. The wing is designed to spread apart behind the base material upon installation for firm hold in hollow wall applications. The wing disperses the weight of the secured item over a larger area, increasing the weight that can be secured compared to a regular bolt.

If you want to mount anything on a wall so that it does not come loose (i.e. towel racks, toilet paper holders) use a toggle bolt and not the cheap sheet rock fasteners that come with the item. These toggle bolts fan out and grab the back of the sheet rock once you push them through the hole. Then you tighten the screw and the two arms grab the back of the sheet rock and pull the installed item tightly against the wall. Use a washer and lock washer at the head of the screw (lock washer goes closest to the screw head) and the item you install will not come loose. Regular sheet rock fasteners almost always come loose sooner or later (usually sooner), especially when there is only one faster used to install the item.

First, Hillman is an A+++ and my go to. This product is a miserable failure of engineering, the toggle is too clunky to hold anything but the smallest projects on sheetrock. Buy a 2-1/2" or longer at 3/16", this 2" is an absolute engineering QC flop and not useful for much.

Too many were defective with missing or broken springs. Without the springs in the toggle insert, they're kind of useless. 11 out of 50 pieces were defective and several bolts were missing as well. I wish I would have considered a different brand.
