About this item

  • These diamond sheets contain carefully graded monocrystalline diamond particles electrostatically coated onto a high strength polyester film backing.
  • This super-fast cutting, long-lasting, water resistant abrasive provides precise, consistent, close tolerance finishes, but excel when used on harder materials such as hardened steel, carbide or gemstones.
  • This aggressive polishing abrasive will cut up to twice as fast and last up to twice as long as aluminum oxide (AO) or silicon carbide (SC) films.
  • They are available in a wide range of precise micron grades from .1 micron (100,000 grit) to 125 micron (120 grit) to meet any sharpening or polishing need.
  • These are PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) backed. Grades from .1 to 30 micron have a 3 mil backing and grades 45 to 125 have a much thicker 5 mil backing. The high-strength polyester film backing is less likely to tear than traditional wet or dry sandpaper.

These 3M (TM) diamond microfinishing lapping sheets were developed for the electronic industry but are the perfect solution to flat lapping, polishing or sharpening just about anything. These diamond sheets contain carefully graded monocrystalline diamond particles electrostatically coated onto a high strength polyester film backing. This super-fast cutting, long-lasting, water resistant abrasive provides precise, consistent, close tolerance finishes, but really excel when used on harder materials such as hardened steel, carbide or gemstones. This diamond film is the most aggressive polishing or sharpening media available and will cut up to twice as fast as aluminum oxide (AO) or silicon carbide (SC) films. The diamond particles have superior fracture resistance and will outlast other lapping and sharpening media by up to two times. They are available in a wide range of precise micron grades from .1 micron (200,000 grit) to 125 micron (120 grit) to meet any sharpening or polishing need. They can be affixed to a hard, flat surface (usually thick float glass) and used to get a scary sharp edge on wood chisels or plane irons. They can be wrapped around contoured sticks and used to sharpen carving tools. They can put a wicked sharp edge on all kinds of knives. They can be used to sharpen carbide cutting tools. They can also be used to put a fine polish on jewelry or gemstones. These sheets are PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) backed. Grades from .1 to 30 micron have a 3 mil backing and grades 45 to 125 have a much thicker 5 mil backing. The high-strength polyester film backing is less likely to tear than traditional wet or dry sandpaper. When affixing to a substrate make sure to fully clean the surface as any debris will create a bump and expose the film to being sliced. They can be used dry but using wet with water or light oil as a lubricant to carry away the swarf is preferred as this minimizes loading and prolongs the life of the abrasive.

I have used this sheet (with the grit equivalent of 2000) as a 'step between' a diamond stone (diamond impregnated steel - 1000 grit *fine) and aluminium oxide lapping paper sheets adhered to float glass.First I can confirm some claims - this adhesive sheet is fast cutting and it is durable. Maybe 2 dozen blades so far, and it isn't spent.I am lapping blades under fluid, with a fair amount of pressure (weight of wrist+) in a spine first, or 'backward' direction, like one would use for stropping. There is some 'tooth' to the diamond sheet; you can feel it cut like you would a v. fine stone. Subtle, but appreciable. (I don't get this toothy feel with the finer oxide papers)It is perhaps too fine to be raising a proper burr, I do not know, but a handful of passes alter the face of the edge, smoothing it, and walking the sharpest side over, like if there were a burr. Subsequent equal treatment of the other side of the edge also smooths, and evens the edge.I have been finishing with oxide adhesive paper, and seeing some of the keenest edges I have ever raised on anything. What's more, I am becoming more and more consistent in my ability to create a repeatable outcome.Try adhesive diamond and oxide papers with architectural glass for knife sharpening. It definitely helped me learn, and made the job quicker. Took some of the guesswork away. I am still a modest novice, but all my knives are whisper sharp. A nice experience while doing daily cooking.

My knife steel is very hard and too hard to sharpen with anything but diamond so these are great. They will last through several blade sharpening sessions.

For what it costs it doesn't last long at all. You would think that 3M could make an abrasive material that lasts longer than the Chinese knock offs. Last time I'll be buying this product. one use and done, sorry I can't have this type of longevity. Don't waste your money, buy the knock off for less

Quality product but is way too expensive for what you get.

First time I placed order product was fine (as expected). I’ve since tried ordering an additional 5 times, and they keep not delivering it - while submitting a delivered claim to Amazon. Quite strange… I’ll just pay the extra few bucks for shipping and purchase this item elsewhere moving forward

I have the 1 micron and have sharpened more than a dozen knives with it and it continues to perform. If I bring a knife up to 6000 or 8000 first this brings a nice shine fairly quickly, using light pressure compared to stones so as to avoid wearing it out. The listing says 1 micron is equal to 25000 grit which is in contridiction to most sources which place it around 14000. Will buy again.
