Brazing aluminum is a mysterious art that's not for everyone. When you see it done properly it's like watching a joint being soldered, where the solder just flows into the joint. These rods are capable of that kind of success, but it takes patience and practice. Aluminum dissipates heat rapidly, so timing is critical in getting the rod onto the work as soon as the work reaches temperature. These rods contain flux, which is there to prevent oxidation during heating. To work that requires that aluminum oxide has already been removed from the work's surface - either by scrubbing or with a chemical cleaner.Assuming a clean surface, there is sufficient flux in these rods to ensure good capillary action and flow into the joint as the rod liquifies. This kit contains 50 foot-long sticks for about $12 bucks. Even when your first try doesn't go well, think of this purchase as good training and practice for a modest price.

prepped the surface , cleaned and used a grinder to create a surface for the material to adhere to and it just bubbled up and rolled off or just formed balls that would not stick to the surface and would not flow or level out !!! garbage ! I know what it should do, I used to be a welder, this stuff is total crap !!

These aluminum brazing rods are not easy to use. They can't weld steel parts together and they need flux to work properly for anything more than filling a small hole.Since most people who buy these aren't welders, I highly recommend watching a couple videos on brazing and getting an appropriate flux before you begin.

My rice cooker pot sprung a few leaks on the bottom, apparently from a boil over that went undiscovered, and possibly from leaving stainless steel utensils in it during a long soak. And salt. Attempts to seal the pitting with regular solder were unsuccessful so I ordered these. With a propane torch I was able to fill in two of three holes flush to the pot bottom. The third still looks bad, but isn’t leaking anymore so that’s a win. The hard part about aluminum repair, if you don’t have access to spendy TIG welding equipment and appropriate shielding gas, is that aluminum dissipates heat so quickly it is difficult to get it hot enough fast enough to melt the filler. Add to that how quickly bare aluminum reacts with air to form a skin of aluminum oxide, which makes getting filler to stick, and you get a difficult repair. So if you sand or grind the repair area and get a torch on it *immediately*, the flux in these rods give you a fighting chance. I think for any future repairs I’ll use either my MAPP/oxy or acetylene/oxy torch (with slightly reducing/carburizing flame) to get hotter heat onto the area even faster. If you have that gear I’d recommend using it in lieu of propane. As far as the description pix showing these being used with a TIG set up, it appears some people have been able to use similar rods with a DCEN setup, but reported the results were, to paraphrase, kinda crap. Chances are if you already have TIG gear you wouldn’t be looking at this product. For all the other diy folks on a budget, these will work for you without anything fancier than some emery cloth or sandpaper and a propane bottle and torch. Okay price for what it is. Thumbs up recommendation

Super useful to weld aluminum pieces to make repairs and fabricate things. The weld is as strong as the metal around it. Just heat with a propane torch and use like solder. Very useful indeed.

love these rods, they melt at low heat, work great.

These rods came in a light plastic bag that had a lot of pin holes. Atmospheric exposure had already oxidized all the rod within. Since the rod was such a small gauge, cleaning the filler material wasn't worth the time and it was recycled.Since preventing oxidation of aluminum filler rod is critical to achieve an acceptable aluminum weld, I recommend finding a product that takes this detail into consideration.

These burn well and make for easy welding. I'm an absolute beginner and find these easy to use.
