Fairly simple product. Your electrical devices such as switches are installed on a box that contains the wiring. Sometimes these boxes are accidentally recessed in the wall. In order to firmly mount the device on the box you may need a rigid surface to screw to. Other uses are kitchen and bathroom backsplashes that are to be tiled. You can install these on any devices that are to be embedded in the tile. This particular item is for 1/2" depth, so your tile plus mastic will have to be that deep. This product is also available in other depths such as 1/4", 3/8", 3/4" etc.As for this particular product, it's sturdy and comes with longer device screws to replace the short mounting screws that usually come with the devices.

Maybe it was just my package, but it did not come with the screws that are shown and described in the product description.

Extenders worked great, provided screws did not. Not to worry, I always have screws around.

There really wasn't much information on these from the product listing page. I was hoping that I could fit these around outlets and switches without having to disconnect the power, detach and reattach the wires.... but it doesn't work that way so be prepared to do some work if using these.However, they do work to extend the outlet box.
