First of all, be aware that these maps (and the National Geographic magazine) are not published by the National Geographic Society. They are published by a firm called National Geographic Partners, which is mostly owned by the Walt Disney Co.First, the positive. The graphical presentation is excellent. The use of color is very effective, and the relief shading is somewhat subdued. Many topographic maps these days are difficult to read due to horribly dark shading. I’d personally prefer no relief shading.I own the 2012 edition of this map. The publisher lists the latest edition of this map as 2020, and provides a magnified preview of an edition with a 2020 date. I’ve compared many features between my 2012 dated map and the 2020 preview image, and I cannot find any changes in the map data.It would take a few pages to list all of the errors, particularly on the trail system. Some of them are almost comical. Plenty of trails are mapped that had already become non-existent in the 1990s. Trail mileages are understated. Vehicle gates are illogically shown. The mapmakers are unaware of any skiing in the Mount Baldy area, and the only trails shown to the summit are from Mount Baldy village and the north backbone. The summit itself is incorrectly labeled. There's a road to Icehouse Saddle? Somehow I missed noticing it during the few dozen times that I've hiked up there. I could go on and on.
