I've tried other styles of tank heaters, and keep coming back to these. Other styles have corroded and stopped working in mere weeks, whereas these chug on for a good 3-6 winters. I do have to replace the cages about once a winter, as they really corrode quickly, but that's not a big deal, I get them on sale in the spring for a few bucks and have them waiting for the next winter. These keep my 100gallon tank 100% ice free, even when it's -30â°F. I only wish they made these on a 10-15' cord so I wouldn't have to use a (heavy-duty) extension cord (and always plugged into a GFCI outlet)

Winter is here in Colorado and these tank heaters are doing their job as advertised. No ice to break and my horses always have a drink of warm water in the freezing weather. This type of heater is great as you just drop it in the tank. No leaking tank seals on my 150 gallon rubber made stock tanks due to the heaters you have to insert in the drain plug.I do have one horse that is curious and loves to explore and test everything in his domain. He has pulled this heater out of the tank a couple of times for personal inspection. With that said, the cord is protected and no damage was done. The tank heater worked perfectly when replaced in the tank. Keep in mind that the tank water needs to be at least 4" deep to cover this tank heater. I will buy this product again

Update: 1/29/2017 I just wanted to say that this water heater still works great a year later. Colorado winters start early and the water trough that doesn't have a heater has stayed frozen for the last two months. There is no ice at all in the trough that has this water heater in it. I highly recommend this product and I definitely think adding the bolts and copper wire has helped a lot.I am very grateful to the guy that left a detailed review about how to prevent this tank heater from rusting. I bought the exact items he listed and put the bolts and copper wire on myself. The reason I have to give this 4 stars is because no where in the description says you have to assemble the tank heater. It might seem self explanatory but, my husband could not figure it out and frustrated he brought it home so I could put it together.The tank heater we received actually is different than the picture in the description. The one in the description looks like it comes attached and holds together better than the one we purchased. I had to twist a stainless steel rod that is twisted onto the two pieces to hold them together. I hope that makes sense and have attached pictures of I used the wrong words. We use this tank heater in our horses 160 gallon water trough and it keeps the ice from being frozen. This is a great product and will hopefully have it longer with using the brass bolts.

Very easy to use. This is second year and still working. No ice at all in water trough. Ordering a second one as we added another trough. Highly recommend.

I bought this heater for the 30 or so fish and the two turtles living in the pond in my back yard. It worked for one day and melted all the ice, so the next day i put my turtles in. Lo and behold, the next morning I awoke to a completely frozen pond with dead fish suspended in chilly horror within the several inches of ice that the heater was supposed to melt. Please do not buy this heater if you are using it for a backyard pond, or really anything, because it is cheap, assembled badly, unreliable, and hard to work with.Pros:noneCons:Does not workwill kill your petsVery unclear instructions

now we can keep the water unfrozen, and the horses aren't scared to drink . one of them did get burned on the floater deicer, she is skittish of getting a drink now
