I really like this gauge. Reading the reviews others made....yes there is only a light on the top of the gauge but that's where your needle will most likely be most of the time (3krpm). I have no problem seeing the numbers at night with this one light bulb.Other than that it clamped easily to my roll bar. I did do a bit of trimming the the foot of the gauge to make it work a bit better bit it is a durable mount and easy to work with. I wired it right to the tachometer plug on my D.U.I. distributor and had no problems with my Howell EFI.Now with a quick glance I can see if I am at good cruise rpm on ready to scatter the motor insides across the highway.

I installed this in my '82 VW Westy and it is a lifesaver. The installation was easy and having a gauge in an air-cooled engine was the first modification I installed to the bus. It's a must have.Works as expected. It is quick, accurate and does the job. Wiring was easy and installation was quick.Like others stated: When the engine is shut off, the needle does not go to 0 until power is applied. Weird but whatever.I do wish they added a small redline needle or something so that there is a visual of maximum RPM's. I've had other tachs with that and it was nice. I simply painted a red line on the glass using a toothpick and model paint and it works fine. I figure the redline in a VW will never change.I also wish the light was a bit better. It's at the top and if the angle is right, you can see the bulb which makes illumination rough. I'm being super picky but I thought I would write about that.

I added the picture to illustrate the mount has the slots for column mount with a hose clamp. Yes I wish it had a round version but it mounts solid even on my narrow column. 4 wire hookup is easy. GND, 12V keyed, Coil & lights. The coil wire is plenty long. In fact all the wires are ample lengths.

Awesome tach! I installed this in a motorhome where the engine's red line is only 5000 RPM. Most tachs out there go to 8000 so there would be 3000 RPM on the scale that would never see the needle! I know that wouldn't bother many folks, but hey, I'm an engineer and that type of detail bothers me! Maybe you've heard the joke: "The optimist sees the glass as half full, the pessimist sees the glass as half empty, but the engineer knows the truth; the glass was not correctly designed and/or specified for its intended use!" Anyway, with the design of this tach, the 2000-4000 RPM range where the engine spends most of its time is near the top of the scale so it makes it easy to check at a glance, I love this thing! Back lighting is good and the needle response is faster than my engine (454 CID/7.4 Liter EFI Chevrolet V-8 for reference) can change RPM so the tach stays spot-on. I have tried a couple of the cheap tachs on Amazon and was disappointed so I figured I would go with an Auto Meter product (I used to use them on my hot-rods so I know their quality. Auto Gage is sort of an "entry level" Auto Meter product: not as awesome as say their Pro Comp line, but still decent for the money. This is a "good bang-for-the-buck" line of gauges. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 Star rating is the fact that the bracket is not adjustable to "clock" the tach. In other words, with the tach attached to a level dash surface, 3000 RPM is at the 12 o'clock position. If you need to mount it on an angled surface, there is no way to do this without trimming off the mounting tabs and fabricating a different mount. Not a big deal but it definitely pulls this out of five star category! Just be aware of where you are going to mount it or be prepared to do a bit of fabrication to the mount or build a "wedge" to install beneath the metal shoe or create a spacer to offset the screw on the side of the tach add some angle. In short, if your engine never sees over 6000 RPM (they do have an 8000 RPM model as well if you need it) and has a compatible ignition system (sorry diesel and DIS folks; you will need adapters to use this tach!) this tachometer is well worth the money and comes highly recommended by someone (me) who has actually installed and is using one!

I don't write a lot of reviews, but this was such a good value I had to say something. It's the perfect size to tuck into the corner between the windshield and a-pillar. Although it's not big, it's very clear and easy to read. The styling looks right at home in my '89 Suburban. The installation using the built-in pedestal was simple and straightforward. Why would anyone spend 4x as much for a similar gage?

The original intent of this tachometer was for transmission monitoring, to check for slipping in mountain regions and while pulling a load. It was very helpful for identifying an occasional engine roar that was due to the fan clutch engaging, and not a transmission problem. Later it was helpful for identifying loss of lock up on a torque converter, which was due to a faulty throttle position sensor. On a transmission that was tuned from the factory to hide shift points, it was helpful to know when the transmission shifted, what gear it was in, and if the converter had locked. Similarly, when installing a shift kit for more distinguishable shift points, it was helpful for confirming that shifts and lockup were occurring at the right time. It has been very reliable and consistent in its performance to be able to monitor in this way. The back light is rather simplistic, but it works well enough to be able to see all of the numbers. As others have noted, it may not return to zero when the engine is stopped (see picture), but I don't mind. The numbers are accurate when the engine is running, which is more important. The one I received was made in Taiwan.

It’s very well made in America! Nice 0 to 6000 rpm range. Problem is that I needed to mount it under my dash. Thus, it would be upside down. Which is really not acceptable to me. The physical nature of this unit does not allow you to mount it upside down. The manufacturer says that more clearly on their own site. Anyways, as another person mentioned, you can be brave and heat up the unit….work the glue on the outer front rim to slowly pull away the rim. Voila! Also, there is a screw in the back after you take the rim off to help you remove the internal unit and reposition to your liking. I was afraid to use a heat gun and so used a very good hair blow dryer. It took me about 15 minutes of intermittent heat and pull to work free the rim from the glue. Also, I previously tested the unit to ensure it was good before I messed with it. I will either use it now in a cluster pod or will reuse the original pod in its new orientation. If it doesn’t work right, it’s on me.
