How Does Radiator Coolant Overflow Tank Work?

The radiator coolant overflow tank saves you money by preventing rust in the car's cooling system. When the engine is operating at its optimum performance, engine coolant is required to maintain it within the operating temperature range. Engine coolant absorbs heat from the engine. As the coolant heats up in the radiator, it begins to expand, causing an increase in pressure in the cooling system of the vehicle. When the coolant pressure in the radiator exceeds the pressure cap setting, the coolant is sealed through the pressure cap and flows through the overflow tube into the radiator coolant overflow tank.

I bought this as an amazon warehouse deal and I was impressed on the item. Seams very well built. Comes with two brackets, two bolts, two nuts, a large hose clamp to hold tank, two small hose clamps for connecting hose, the hose and the tank. The tank is not vented which I think it should be since that is why it aids when installing to a radiator but it can be fixed easily. It is somewhat on the small size, I have not measured the amount of volume it hokd but it seems about a quart and a half maybe less maybe more. I believe I would pay the full price. Only downside is the size but it works for my project.

Overflow reservoir works great and looks great too! Really enhances the look of the bay. Great product through and through. Couple little things, I’d recommend experienced installer for installation as you’ll need to make a bracket for the brackets provided to attach to as well as I’d recommend putting anti-seize around the threads to prevent damaging them. Only downside I saw was Rubber tubing provided is very cheap. I recommend using the OEM overflow tubing attached to the stock one you are removing.

Put this on a custom car. There is no vent hole, so it is really a pressurized expansion tank.I drilled a hole, to make it vent. I made my own mount because the provided mounts are a joke. In the end, the capacity is too small to function properly. When the engine is cold, the tank will look COMPLETELY empty. When hot, the tank will look COMPLETELY full. ***ANY deviation*** form this either makes the car run hot, or push coolant out my weep hole. However, for the money, it's a pretty nicely made tank that appears to be powder coated. The cap has nicely machined threads. It looks right at home under the hood of a hotrod.I bought two: one =black and one silver. They both are nice, but exhibit the same problem with capacity. This is on a small GM v-6 that was retrofitted into a couple old British roadsters.

Nice piece for the price. Hard to believe you can get this thing so cheap. Not worth fabricating you own when you can buy this.Seems to work fine and is catching some oil on my turbo lt1. Nice piece of mind to keep the oil out of the intake. The hose that it comes with isn’t much but again for the money the canister is nice.

Drilled a hole in lid and installed it on my civic vx because my original overflow tank had a faulty lid and it has been a few weeks heavy driving and no overheating issues. I even used the orange hose and it is holding up fine I think because I vented the lid. Will update if I have any problems. Overflow is temporarily mounted because the hardware included isn't quite right for what I want to do but it's still usable. Would buy again.
